Check out this article from the University of Pisa about UGA Music Therapy’s recent visit to their NICU Follow-Up Clinic! Click on the link below to see the original article, or read the English translation here:

A group of students from the Music Therapy Program at the University of Georgia (USA) visited the Neonatology Unit of the Pisa University Hospital as part of an international training program dedicated to early intervention and child neurodevelopment.

As emphasized by Rosa Scaramuzzo, Acting Director of the Neonatology Unit, “The visit represents an important opportunity for academic and professional exchange and demonstrates the value of the long-standing collaboration among the Pisa University Hospital, the University of Pisa, and the Stella Maris Foundation.

For many years, these three institutions have worked in close synergy to promote clinical care, follow-up, and research programs for premature infants and children who experienced particularly vulnerable conditions during pregnancy, childbirth, or the neonatal period.

This collaboration,” Scaramuzzo continued, “contributes to the development of an interdisciplinary model that integrates clinical care, scientific research, and early interventions based on the best available evidence, from admission to the neonatal intensive care unit through outpatient follow-up after discharge.

Our shared goal is to promote the well-being and neurodevelopment of children and their families through innovative, personalized programs focused on continuity of care.”

With our study abroad coming to an end, we’re saying arrivederci to Stella Maris research institute, Tirrenia, and the beautiful Cinque Terre. Over the last few days our students have been able to learn from clinicians at Stella Maris about their current research projects, infant vision development, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and the use of technology in pediatric rehabilitation.

After we wrapped up our coursework, students got to visit the Cinque Terre and enjoy one last night of fellowship at our goodbye dinner. These two weeks have been amazing, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the University of Pisa, Stella Maris, all the clinicians that spoke to our students, and our amazing tour director Kevin. Grazie mille!

UGA Music Therapy Dawgs have arrived in Pisa and we’ve been busy! This week our students have attended classes, observed sessions in the NICU Follow-Up Clinic, co-lead a NICU Parent Support Group, participated in instrument improvisation labs, attended a cooking class, and saw the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Thank you so much to the University of Pisa, Dr. Olena Chorna, Dr. Andrea Guzetta, Dr. Aurora Scabia, and Dr. Daniele Marangoni for sharing your knowledge with our students!

There’s much more to come, and we’re excited for our students to continue to learn and grow while in Italy!
