🌿🔎3rd graders as field botanists! 👩🏾‍🔬🌱🧑🏻‍🔬

Students advanced their foundation of field science skills acquired in their years at Chillicothe Primary.

As part of the classroom botany studies, this place-based learning included a comparative study of inherited traits, scientific field sketches and citizen science.🌼✍️📐

🥾 🥾 This Muddy Boots combines life science, literacy, collaboration, communication and real-world math applications, like perimeter, sample measurement, and data collection.🤩💯

🦃🦊Our 4th graders kicked off Muddy Boots season this week, by acting as Forensic Field Scientists on their expedition at Buzzard's Roost. To crack a “wildlife crime" they took on the role of a wildlife officer. 🕵🏽‍♂️🕵️‍♀️

While studying two simulations, students dug deep into the evidence. They analyzed trail cam photos, clues, animal tracks, and s**t. After discussing their observations and inferences, they used their findings to justify their decisions, showcasing their critical thinking skills in action! 🔍 🐾 🥾

Maker Mats are where creative thinking meets family fun, while building a strong foundation of literacy and STEM. The first Innovators' awards will be scheduled for the end of the semester. To earn an invite, students must complete 3 Maker Mats or 2 Maker Mats + 1 Muddy Boots STEM home connection.🏅🏅🏅

🌳🌲We are incredibly proud of our 4th and 5th Grade Arborist Technicians! This year-long VOICE experience gave students the opportunity to plant trees, conduct research, collect data, use geolocation technology, and create scientific sketches while learning about environmental stewardship. A heartfelt thank you to our amazing partners, AEP Ohio and the Ross County Park District, for making this authentic learning experience possible! 🌳🌲

🔍🏞️Mrs. Atwood’s Muddy Boots expedition took students on an engaging, hands-on journey through the study of invasive species, water safety, and the stream ecology of North Fork Creek - along with a fun exploration of playground physics! 🛝

🚨Invasive species alert! 🌿🔍 Our 4th graders’ spring Muddy Boots experience took them into the field acting as ecologists, to study the effects of the Emerald Ash Borer and the Spotted Lanternfly on our ecosystem here in Southern Ohio. 🌳🍃🪲🪾

Students identified ash trees and examined the telltale S-shaped markings left by the Ash Borer. They also collected data on the invasive Tree of Heaven and used the Seek app to identify Poison Hemlock and Honeysuckle. Most importantly, they can now clearly explain how these species harm our local environment. A few classes were able to observe a Rat Snake. 🐍 Hands-on learning at its best!
