! We offer plenty of opportunities for our students to learn outside of the classroom. Some of the field trips from this past spring include the Kindergarteners field trip around various Atchison businesses, such as Gambino's and Rainey's Arcade; the 7th grade field trip to the Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Park and the Kansas State Capitol; 2nd grade field trip to Science City; the 8th graders trip to Atchison Public Library to do genealogy research in the Kansas Room; and the middle school girl's Spring Tea at Muchnic Art Gallery, where they had SBCS alumna, Audrey Hill, speak to them about high school.

Mrs. Brianne Westhoff comes to St. Benedict Catholic School with a wealth of experience. After earning a degree in International Politics from the University of Colorado, Boulder, Mrs. Westhoff earned her alternative teaching licensure with the Archdiocese of Denver, as well as a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction, with a focus on reading, from Western Governors University. Mrs. Westhoff continued her studies in reading instruction, becoming Orton-Gillingham (a structured approach that aligns to the Science of Reading) certified in 2016.
Mrs. Westhoff began teaching in Catholic schools in 2013 "with a lovely group of third graders." She also taught Kindergarten and 1st grade in public schools, as well. Mrs. Westhoff also has experience working with parishes, helping out with Totus Tuus, FOCUS Bible studies, and religious education. She has also served at the Level 1 Atria for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd here in Atchison.
We are excited to have Mrs. Westhoff join our staff! She will be using her education and many experienced in the various roles that she will serve at the school this year: she will be the Resource teacher for students in Kindergarten to 3rd grade, teach 8th grade Pre-Algebra class, and will also assist in the PreK4 atrium session in the CGS classroom at our school. We have had the pleasure of having the Westhoff children at our school and are looking forward to having Mrs. Westhoff join our staff and school family this year. Welcome to SBCS, Mrs. Westhoff!

We are so excited to have our students back in the classroom! There is always something interesting going on in our classes at SBCS. Some activities that happened during second semester last year includes Dr. Mark Schramp's biology students teaching the 3rd graders about digestion; the Pony Express visiting the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders; Mrs. Schramp's Genius Hour students presenting their projects; the middle schoolers graduating after learning about personal finance from Mrs. Cordell; and Mrs. Tufte making leaf prints with the 4th graders.

Ms. Caitlin Drees is also a familiar face to St. Benedict Catholic School. She worked with Mrs. Denise HIrl last year as Mrs. Hirl's student teacher. We were delighted that Ms. Drees applied for the middle school math position after Mrs. Hirl announced her retirement. Ms. Drees will bring with her all that learned from Mrs. Hirl and put her own spin to teaching math and 7th grade religion, using her many God-given gifts and talents.
Ms. Drees is a product of a lifetime of Catholic schooling, having attended Catholic schools from preschool to now! She majored in Secondary Education and Mathematics and is excited to use all that she learned in the classroom.
"I am excited to grow my skills as an educator and encourage students to grow in faith, scholarship, and community," says Ms. Drees. We're excited to have you join the SBCS family as a full-fledge teacher, Ms. Drees!

During the winter and spring months last school year, our students showed off their mental and athletic skills. Every week for two months, dozens of students from 2nd grade on up showed up early in the morning for Chess Club. Both our 7th grade and 8th grade Scholars Bowl students did an amazing job during their season; 7th grade ended up in 2nd place at the NEKL tournament. And our middle schoolers set personal, school, and league records during the track season. Great job to all of our Ravens! βοΈππ

We had a incredibly successful golf tournament earlier this month. Everyone who came out enjoyed playing some golf, fellowship, and several people went home with some really great gifts! Thank you to everyone who came out and played, for all of our sponsors and volunteers, and for all of our family and friends who prayed for good weather and supported this wonderful event! We are truly thankful for everyone's generosity!
