Today, we remember Jade Marie Morgan, whose life touched so many people in our community.

Known to those close to her as “Jaderbug”, she is remembered for her beautiful smile, goofy sense of humor, sarcasm, and direct personality. She loved the beach, her friends, and her family.

Jade was a student at Astoria High School when her life was tragically cut short in September 2015. The Jade Marie Morgan Memorial Scholarship was established in her memory to help an Astoria High School graduate continue their education. This scholarship has carried Jade's name forward and has become part of another young person’s story as they take their next steps after high school.

Today, we remember Jade, the people who loved her, and the legacy created in her name.

The 90s may be having their comeback, but Astoria in the 2000s gave us plenty to remember, too.

For Astoria, this was a decade of more change. Downtown was being revitalized, the Maritime Museum expanded, FisherPoets grew, and our community continued to find new ways to celebrate its history and waterfront.

But when we think about the 2000s, it's the people we remember most. The hairstyles. The school pictures. The questionable fashion choices. The friends who were always together. And the faces that made Astoria feel like home.

This week, we're checking in with AHS 2024 graduate, Aspen Braaten.

Aspen is a student at the University of Pikeville in Kentucky, where she plays on the women's volleyball team. She's pursuing a Bachelor's in Business Management and an Associate's in Film and Media. She plans to complete her undergraduate studies in May 2028 and continue on to earn a Master's in Business Administration.

Aspen shared that just 10 days before she was set to leave for a different college, she followed her instincts and committed to Pikeville instead. This decision has given her what she calls a second family, full of mentors and friendships that continue to shape who she's becoming. Since arriving at Pikeville, she's built strong time-management and leadership skills while juggling life as a student-athlete, Resident Assistant, and campus employee.

Balancing athletics, work, and leadership hasn't been easy, but Aspen believes athletics has taught her discipline and resilience. As she continues her degree, AHSSI's scholarship support will help ease her financial load and let her stay focused on her goals.

This week, we're honoring Hal Snow, whose legacy lives on through the Snow Family Scholarship.

Hal was born in Astoria in 1941 and attended Lewis & Clark Central grade school before graduating from Astoria High School in 1959. After serving in the National Guard, he earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon in 1966 and graduated from the University of Oregon Law School in 1968. He married fellow lifelong Astorian Jeanyse Reith in 1967, and the two returned home to practice law together, eventually building the firm Snow & Snow. Hal went on to serve as Astoria's City Attorney for nearly 45 years, while also serving as Warrenton's city attorney.

Hal's impact on AHSSI runs deep. He was one of the organization's founders, working alongside Michael Foster as what AHSSI describes as the "silent partner" behind the scholarship program, providing the legal groundwork that helped it grow into the multimillion-dollar program it is today. Beyond AHSSI, Hal was a driving force in the community, supporting organizations like Friends of the Astoria Column, Liberty Restoration, the Columbia River Maritime Museum, and the Astoria Riverfront Trolley. He was also instrumental in establishing the community soccer complex in Warrenton.

Hal passed away in December 2016. A City of Astoria resolution honoring his life put it simply: Astoria is a better place because of Hal Snow. His wife, Jeanyse Snow, passed away in 2020. His sons, Jeremy and Randall, both AHS graduates, carry his legacy forward as part of the AHSSI community to this day.

In 2026, two AHS grads received the Snow Family Scholarship - Alexis Torres and Alexzandra Nolasco, both successful students and soccer players at AHS.

The 90s are having a major comeback and this week we're flashing back to remember Astoria during this impactful decade.

The 1990s were another decade of change for Astoria. The community was moving further away from its traditional fishing, canning and lumber economy while embracing its historic buildings, waterfront, tourism, and its growing reputation as a movie town.

Hollywood came back. Kindergarten Cop was filmed in Astoria in 1990 at John Jacob Astor Elementary, with local students and faculty appearing as extras. In 1992, Free W***y brought another film crew to the North Coast.

At the same time, Astoria was working hard to preserve the character of the city. Historic neighborhoods and buildings were being documented and protected, while the Clatsop County Fair moved to a new home and the community faced the end of passenger railroad service.

Our alumni update this week is Conrad Judd Field.

Since graduating from AHS in 2023, Conrad has been studying Business Administration with a minor in Family Business at Oregon State University. He plans to graduate in 2027 and continue towards his goal to join his family's business in the car dealership industry. He says his time at OSU has reshaped what that goal means to him. He's learned that running a business is really about leadership, relationships, and problem-solving.

One of Conrad's proudest accomplishments while at OSU has been teaching classes on steelhead fishing to other students, sharing his passion for the outdoors while building confidence and communication skills along the way.

Balancing classes, work, teaching, and planning for the future hasn't been easy, but he credits college with teaching him real-world responsibility. As he heads into his final year at OSU, AHSSI's scholarship support will help ease the financial load and let him stay focused on school and his future in the family business.

This week, we're learning more about Flora Mae Chan, an amazing woman who spent her incredible 104 years as a proud Astorian.
Flora was born in 1916 in the back of her family's grocery store on Bond Street. Known to most as "Cookie," she graduated from Astoria High School in 1936 and then trained as a Registered Nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital. She came home to Astoria and worked for 25 years at the Astoria Clinic, helping thousands of babies come into the world, and sending many of them home wearing tiny hand-knitted caps she made herself. In addition to nursing, she was an accomplished knitter and quilter, golfed until 90, quilted until 95, and kept up her daily walks well into her later years.

Flora passed away in 2021 at 104 years old, leaving behind three children, six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. In her memory, her family asked that gifts be directed to the Astoria High School Scholarship Fund instead of flowers. This gift created the Flora Mae Chan Memorial Scholarship, which supports young women graduating with an interest in the medical field. Recent recipients include Molly Tremain (2025), Katelyn Biros (2024), Aaliyah Birdeno (2023), and Tigerlily Russell (2022).

In September, we're continuing our trip down memory lane, one decade at a time. This week, we're spotlighting AHS in the 80s and we found a collection of yearbook photos to share. Who do you recognize? Shout them out in the comments.

The 80s was the decade that put Astoria on the map, when "The Goonies" came to town and turned our small city into a piece of movie history that fans still visit from around the world today. It was also a decade of change: Bumble Bee Cannery and Astoria Plywood both closed, while the Port of Astoria started welcoming cruise ships and "Short Circuit" filmed here as well. By end of the 80s, Astoria was shifting from a city built around fishing, canneries, and lumber toward the historic, tourism-focused community we know today.

AHSSI has stayed consistent, continuing to help graduates pursue postsecondary education. Join us as we celebrate our 50th anniversary on October 3. Tickets are available at astoriascholarship.org.

This week's Alumni Update is Georgia White-House. Georgia is entering her final semester at Linfield University this fall, where she's completing a Biology major with a Chemistry minor. Since graduating from AHS, she's made the Dean's List, joined the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, served as a three-year ASLU Student Senator, competed at UCA Cheer Nationals, and spent a summer as an undergraduate researcher synthesizing organic anti-cancer compounds.

"It has been an honor to experience Linfield as an alumnus of Astoria High School, and I do my best to represent the Fighting Fishermen in the most esteemed way."

AHSSI is proud to support Georgia as she finishes strong at Linfield.
