No peeking! Kindergarten scientists put their sense of sight to the test with a blindfolded LEGO challenge: build a house without seeing a thing.

As part of their study of the five senses, students are learning how scientists use their senses to make observations and understand the world around them.

The start of each year at Aspen Country Day begins a little differently for Middle Schoolers: before classes get underway, students head into the mountains together for Outdoor Education.

This year’s trips took students across the high country, from Savage Lakes and Tabor Creek to the Peter Estin and Fowler-Hilliard huts. One group even “walked home,” climbing over 11,840-foot Midway Pass before following the Hunter Creek Trail all the way back to Aspen.

Along the way: alpine lakes and high passes, hut nights and tent nights, long miles, cold swims, big views and plenty of opportunities to figure things out together.

It’s a start to the year that asks students to carry what they need, contribute to the group, and discover just how capable they can be when the trail gets steep.

Aspen native Bree Kidd didn’t have to travel far to find her way to ACDS, though there was a California detour first. After leaving home to earn a degree in Kinesiology from Concordia University Irvine, she returned to Aspen for family, the boyfriend who became her husband, and eventually, a career spent working with kids.

Bree joined ACDS in 2021 as a Lower School substitute, later subbed in Middle School, and this year is a First Grade Assistant. She came with plenty of experience: 15 years of K–12 substituting in the Aspen School District, stints at several local preschools, and time on the mountain as a PSIA-certified ski instructor and children’s specialist.

No surprise, then, that Community is the ACDS core value that means the most to her. She loves the way students, families and faculty connect across the school, especially on Blue Green Day, when older and younger students team up and she gets to work alongside colleagues from other divisions. For Bree, it all comes back to the people around her, the connections she’s built, and a place she’s always been lucky enough to call home.

From piano lessons to 13 shows in a single year, John Konstantopoulos has built a life around music, theater, and teaching. This fall, he joins ACDS as the Middle School Performing Arts teacher.

Originally from Sarasota, Florida, John earned his BA from the University of Central Florida and has worked throughout the Roaring Fork Valley as a teaching artist, director, and music director. His path to education began in college, when giving piano lessons showed him how much he enjoyed working with students.

John is also a classically trained upright bassist who turns to an instrument whenever he’s having a bad day. He’d like to get better at sewing, considers caffeine an Achilles heel, and finds spending a beautiful Colorado day inside a dark theater energizing.

The trend John would most like to see make a comeback? Finger mustaches. Clearly, ACDS Middle School Performing Arts is in good hands. 🥸
