When the Lion Speaks - Poetry for America's 250 with Poet Laureate and National Poetry Slam Champion, Jovan Mays on Saturday, 10/17, 1-4pm at the CMC Aspen Campus in the AABC. Blending passion, humor, historical insight, and lyrical artistry, Jovan Mays creates an experience that is both deeply personal and profoundly American—one that celebrates the freedom of expression that is one of America’s most valued traditions and continues to define our nation. Democracy isn't a spectator sport — and Colorado Mountain College is building the infrastructure to prove it.

Today, September 17, is National Constitution Day, marking the anniversary of the U.S. Constitution's signing in 1787. At CMC, we're marking it by putting a spotlight on the Center for Civics Education & Engagement, which brings students, faculty, and community members together to build the skills to lead, engage, and strengthen democratic life in our mountain towns.

This spring, that looked like two days at the Colorado State Capitol. A group of CMC students toured the building, met with state leaders, and observed the legislative process firsthand — learning how policy intersects with higher education, community development, and public budgeting.

Through academic programs, community partnerships, and hands-on experiences, the Center connects learning to action — developing the ethical, engaged leaders our region needs. This fall's initial lineup of free community education programming includes a discussion on patriotism vs. nationalism, a spoken word workshop, and a community poetry event honoring America's 250th, with more civics and community offerings launching throughout the year.

The “Hot” new item in Aspen is the Colorado Mountain College SPORK (it’s a spoon and a fork all in one!). Conan loved it, and dove into the best ooey, gooey Mac and Cheese at Mactoberfest. Thanks for your support of CMC, Mr. O’Brien. Thanks for all the laughs.

Please help us welcome Katie Hone Wiltgen, CMC's new Vice President and Campus Dean for the Aspen and Carbondale campuses!

A longtime Roaring Fork Valley resident who calls Basalt home, Katie brings more than 20 years of leadership in education and community-building to the role. Most recently, she served as Dean of Education and Community at the Aspen Music Festival and School where she led programming reaching thousands of students across the region every year — building the kind of partnerships and community trust that make a real difference for students.

"Katie brings an exceptional combination of strategic leadership, deep community relationships and a lifelong commitment to expanding educational success," said CMC President Matt Gianneschi. "Her personal connection to the Roaring Fork Valley and her collaborative approach to student success make her uniquely well suited to lead our Aspen and Carbondale campuses."
