For the third year in a row, Southern Oregon University’s Digital Cinema program has been named one of MovieMaker Magazine’s “30 Best Film Schools in the U.S. and Canada”, and it’s the only program recognized in Oregon, Washington or Idaho!
From hands-on production experience to industry connections and The Crew Experience, SOU students are learning to turn creative ideas into real films right here in Ashland.

Piers Dennis is a versatile filmmaker and director known for his authentic storytelling, strong creative relationships, sharp editing, and emotionally compelling work across film, music videos, and branded projects.

“SOU provided me with a creative playground to explore my interests in filmmaking with fellow, like-minded artists. Through these collaborations I was able to foster new relationships that would continue to this day, and I cherish my time exploring Southern Oregon through a camera lens.”

Meet Dr. Jesse Longhurst, SOU alum and Dean of the School of Education!
A longtime educator and passionate scholar, Dr. Longhurst’s work focuses on rural, remote and island education. From researching schools on the tiny island of Sark to connecting with educators across the Pacific, she is dedicated to understanding how education can help rural communities thrive.
Now serving as Dean, Jesse continues to bring her expertise, curiosity and passion back to the university that helped shape her journey.❤️🖤

"I graduated from SOU in 2011 with a major in French and a minor in Human Communications, and a year abroad at the University of Poitiers set me on the path to international education. But it was the SOU community itself - faculty and staff who genuinely believed in me, and friendships from all over the world through the International Student Association - that gave me a lifelong love of learning and a heartfelt desire to build a career in higher education. Today, I'm the Assistant Director of Education Abroad at Emory University in the College of Arts and Sciences, where I help students find their own transformative experiences abroad - passing along the same care and belief that SOU once gave me."
