Northland Lumberjack Forecast

A Tornado Watch has been issued for portions of northeast Minnesota and has been extended eastward to include all of northwest Wisconsin until 10 PM CDT. This means that any thunderstorms that develop this afternoon and evening will have the potential to develop tornadoes. Storms will also be capable of very large hail and damaging winds. Have a plan to take shelter should storms threaten your location! Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect from 7 PM this evening until 10 AM tomorrow. A spring storm continues to spread rain into the region today and transitions into a rain/snow mix or all snow beginning early this evening. Generally 4 to 8 inches of snowfall in the warning area with locally higher amounts possible near Lake Superior shoreline and higher terrain. Freezing rain is also possible over northwest Wisconsin. Heavy, wet snow could cause power outages, slippery road conditions, and reduced visibilities.

A powerful spring storm will bring a few rounds of heavy snow today and extremely strong winds. Snow will be off-and-on in nature today, but when it snows travel could be nearly impossible - don't get caught off guard! Avoid travel this afternoon and evening if at all possible. Strong winds will lead to both blowing snow and large waves on Lake Superior, causing lakeshore flooding as water is forced inland. With some ice still out on the lake, there could be chunks of ice lofted onto shore - please stay far away from the lake today!

TODAY IS THE DAY TO PREPARE! A powerful spring storm will bring heavy snow and strong winds to the Northland starting late night into Friday, with the worst of the storm on Thursday afternoon. Be ready for the storm by making sure your vehicle and home are ready, and if at possible, plan to avoid travel Thursday, especially in the afternoon and evening.

A potent winter storm will impact the Northland starting late Wednesday night through Friday. This will bring wet heavy accumulating snow to much of the region. Along with the heavy snow, winds will increase with blizzard conditions possible at times on Thursday. Now is the time to prepare. Traveling will be hazardous if not impossible at times. Snow will begin late on Wednesday, become most intense during the day Thursday and gradually taper off on Friday. Stay tuned to the latest forecast as totals still may change.

Northland College MET students are traveling south today to attend the 17th Annual Great Lakes Meteorology Conference held at Valparaiso University! Sophomore, Leah Kiser, will present a poster titled, "Frequency of Spatial Synoptic Classification Types for Duluth, MN during 1948-2017."

A winter storm will bring widespread snow to the Northland Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon. Snow accumulation of 6 to 9 inches with isolated 10-12 totals are expected from central MN to northwest Wisconsin. Lower totals of 4 to 6 inches are expected farther north. Travel will become difficult Saturday afternoon and remain difficult through Sunday due to reduced visibility and snow covered roads.
