THE END OF AN ERA! MRS. NANOS IS RETIRING! This long, so please bear with me.
Laurie Nanos, Warren EDP teacher extraordinaire, was hired by Melissa Mercon Smith, the founder of the Ashland Extended Day Program, in November 2000. Mrs. Nanos worked at the Pittaway School with the kindergarten EDP with myself and Teresa McCarrick, who later became the PE teacher at the Warren School. At that time, kindergarten was not completely full day yet. The kindergarten kids who enrolled in EDP would go to kindergarten in the morning or the afternoon, and would start or continue their day at EDP. It was our job to create a curriculum for these students that complemented what they were learning in kindergarten. Enriching, curious, fun, energizing-all words to describe the activities and experiences that we created with and for our EDP students. You name it, and I guarantee that Mrs. Nanos was right in the middle of it! Walks to Stone Park, rides in a firetruck, going to Cherry Blossom to celebrate Lunar New Year, making smores on the steps at Pittaway, playing April Fool's Day jokes, reading spooky stories, celebrating 26 Variety Shows, Halloween parties, and Luaus-lots of history together as coworkers!
Laurie and I came over to work at Warren EDP with the 1st and 2nd graders in the early 2000's. Mrs. Nanos simultaneously became an ESP in Bev Moore's kindergarten class at Pittaway, which allowed her to continue working at EDP in the afternoon. When kindergarten moved up to the Warren School, it was much easier, since Mrs. Nanos no longer had to commute from Pittaway to Warren at 3:00! Mrs. Nanos did both jobs until she retired as an ESP in 2021 but stayed on at EDP working from 2:00-6:00.
The good times continued, the bonds grew stronger, and we were able to work with some phenomenal EDP teachers. Each one contributed to our story and our strength as a successful program. At the core, though. it was always Mrs. Nanos, bringing the joy, the comfort, the warm embrace for the struggling child, the connection that so many kids are looking for. It truly has been the honor of my career working side by side with this incredible teacher for 26 years. Sympathetic, empathetic, always there to help out, willing to do anything for the good of the children. Truly one of the best. Thank you for being an integral part of the EDP village, Laurie! You will be missed!
Be sure to wish Mrs. Nanos well as she moves into retirement. If you are at Warren, please stop by the dining room between 3:30 and 4:00 to say "Happy retirement"! The last day of EDP(June 23) is also her last day, then she will be taking care of her granddaughter, Zoey, and new grandson, Henry, who is also making his debut on June 23rd!
Congratulations, Laurie, and hopefully you will make the trek back to Warren to visit since you have to travel so far!
Thanks for the memories! And don't worry-Carol Ferrier said she is going to run Flashlight Tag for you, no matter how cold it is outside in December!
