Birdsong is a preschool program for children ages two to five years old. My home is a warm environment where it smells of the day’s cooking and I am busy cleaning and cooking, sewing and preparing for the day’s work. We spend our mornings together engaging our senses at play inside and outside, painting, drawing, singing and moving at circle time, and enjoying a story before going home. The childr
en need the consistency that our daily and weekly rhythms provide, as then they know what to expect and can make graceful transitions throughout our mornings together. We also honor the rhythms of the seasons as much of our circle songs and verses reflect what we see in nature at the time; we celebrate seasonal festivals such as the Lantern Walk in the fall, and May Day in the spring. The curriculum includes building kindness and emotional literacy, learning basic manners and good mealtime habits, developing pre-literacy through verse, song and story, and reverence for the natural world of which we are a part. Cooperation, patience, tolerance, discovery- these are the lessons of preschool. The children grow together and develop a bond that reaches beyond friendship into the realm of love, and form a community of their own making. Birdsong meets from 9:00 to 1:00 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. The tuition for the year is $3400; there is an additional $125 non-refundable deposit upon enrollment that covers supplies for the year. I have taught in my home for eleven years. I received a B.A. in Holistic Education from Lewis and Clark College in 1997. I have taken education courses at Naropa University and SOU, and participated in the Waldorf Kindergarten workshop at the Rudolf Steiner College in 2002. I continue my studies of children and education through workshops, conferences, reading, and conversing with other teachers. I sing in the Rogue World Ensemble and enjoy all kinds of dance. I am married to Koeby, a social studies teacher, and we have six children. We strive to do good work and have fun in this life. It is my honor to serve my community as a teacher, supporting children and their families. Enrollment is based on space availability; children can potentially join throughout the year.
