Autism is part of Robert’s story, but it does not determine his potential. Every video he creates, every puzzle he solves, and every new technology he explores gives us another glimpse of the incredible young man he is becoming.

As Robert’s mother, I have learned that our children’s abilities may not always appear in the ways others expect—but their strengths are real, meaningful, and worthy of celebration.

To every parent navigating autism services, school meetings, evaluations, accommodations, or an IEP: You are not alone. Some days will bring progress, while others may bring frustration, questions, or uncertainty. Please remember that you know your child’s strengths, needs, and potential better than anyone.

I created this Support Group so local families can:

As parents of children with IEPs entering middle school, what questions did you ask before school started?

For example, I recently asked:
*Is there an orientation specifically for incoming students with IEPs?
*Is Knight Camp available for students receiving special education services?
*How are students with autism supported during loud bell transitions and other sensory challenges?
*Are administrators and support staff trained to assist students on the autism spectrum when special education staff are unavailable?
*What is the school's protocol when a student experiences sensory overload or needs immediate support?
*How are parents involved in planning a successful transition from elementary to middle school?

I'd love to hear what questions you asked and what answers you received so we can help one another prepare our children for a successful school year.

"Did You Know This Exists in Virginia?"

Many autism families are asking the same question:

"What happens when my child becomes an adult?"

One thing I’m learning through this journey is that many families do not realize Virginia already has programs connected to:
✔ Independent living support
✔ Housing assistance opportunities
✔ Accessibility modifications
✔ Developmental disability waiver services
✔ Community-based supports

Housing is more than a roof over someone’s head.

It can mean:
💙 Stability
💙 Safety
💙 Routine
💙 Independence

Families should not wait until age 18 to start planning.

The earlier we understand resources and options, the more opportunities we create for our children’s future.

This is exactly why Autism Housing & Independence (AHI) exists.

💙 Day 30: This Is Just the Beginning-Autism Awareness Month- April 2026

Why I Started Autism Housing & Independence

As we close out Autism Awareness Month, I want to take a moment to share something from the heart.

Because this journey…
👉 was never just about posting for 30 days.

"The Reason Behind This Mission". Autism Housing & Independence didn’t start as a business idea. It started as a need.

As a parent, I found myself asking the same questions so many families ask:

*What will my child’s future look like?

*Where will they live?

*Will they be safe?

*Will they be able to live independently?

And the hardest one of all…

👉 What happens when I’m no longer there?

"What I Realized".

*There were resources out there.
*There were programs.
*There were conversations.

But something was missing.

👉 A clear path.
👉 Real guidance.
👉 Practical solutions for families.

Especially when it came to housing and independence.

🏡 Why Housing Matters So Much

Housing is not just about having a place to live.

It’s about:

✔ Stability
✔ Safety
✔ Routine
✔ Confidence
✔ Independence

👉 It’s the foundation for everything else.

And yet… it’s one of the biggest gaps families face.

So here is "Why I Chose to Speak Up".

This month, I made a decision:

👉 To stop keeping these conversations private
👉 And start sharing them openly

Because I knew…

If I had these questions, other families did too.

Over the past 30 days, I’ve had conversations with parents who are:

✔ Searching for answers
✔ Feeling overwhelmed
✔ Trying to plan for the future
✔ Wanting better options for their children

And what I’ve seen is this:

👉 You are not alone.

Protecting Your Child’s Future Beyond Housing

Over the past 28 days, we’ve talked about:
✔ Housing
✔ Independence
✔ Safety
✔ Support systems
✔ Planning for the future

But today, we’re going to talk about something that many families avoid—not because it’s unimportant…

But because it feels complicated.

Why This Matters More Than You Think
If something happens to you…
• Who will make decisions for your child?
• Who will manage finances?
• How will housing be maintained?

These are not easy questions. But they are necessary.

Yes, these are some of the realities many families face.
Without a legal and financial plan:
❗ Benefits can be lost
❗ Assets can be mismanaged
❗ Housing plans can fall apart
❗ Your child may not have the support you intended
Planning protects everything you’ve been building.

Remember, It’s Not Just About the House.

Buying a home is one step. Protecting that home—and your child’s ability to live in it—is another.

This is where legal and financial strategy comes in.

This is one of the most important tools available.

These accounts allow individuals with disabilities to:

✔ Pay for qualified expenses
✔ Maintain eligibility for certain benefits
A powerful tool for financial independence.

🔹 4. Life Insurance Planning
This is not just about coverage.
It’s about ensuring:
• Long-term care funding
• Housing stability
• Financial continuity

🔹 5. Estate Planning
Your estate plan should include:
✔ A will
✔ Designated trustees
✔ Instructions for care
✔ Housing plans
This ensures your wishes are honored.

Here are some common mistakes families make.
❌ Leaving assets directly to the child
❌ Not setting up a trust
❌ Waiting too long
❌ Not coordinating legal + housing plans
These mistakes can undo everything you’ve built.

💙 Day 28: The Future Starts Now

This Isn’t Just a Plan… It’s Your Child’s Life
After everything we’ve talked about this month—
housing, independence, safety, planning…

I want to slow this down for a moment.
Because behind all the information, there’s something deeper. This is about your child’s life.

If you’re a parent of a child on the autism spectrum, you’ve probably thought about this… even if you haven’t said it:
*“What is my child’s life going to look like when I’m not there?”
That question is heavy.

And I understand why many families avoid it.

Not because they don’t care…
*But because they care so much

Over the past 27 days, we've talked about a lot:
• Housing options
• Building independence
• Safety planning
• Support systems
• Government programs
• Real estate strategies

But if I’m being honest with you…
None of this matters unless it leads to action.

I’ve spoken to many parents this month.

And one thing I keep hearing is:
•“I’ll figure it out later.”

I get it. Life is busy. This is overwhelming.
But here’s the truth:
•The longer we wait, the fewer options we have.

Not because we did something wrong…
• But because independence takes time to build.

Remember, "Independence Doesn’t Start at 18"

This is one of the biggest misconceptions I see.
Independence is not something that suddenly happens when your child becomes an adult.

It's something we build little by little.
At home. Every day.

This doesn’t mean you need to have everything figured out.
It just means you take one step.

Start Small
Give your child simple responsibilities.
• Putting things away
• Helping with meals
• Following routines
It may not feel like much…
But this is where independence begins.

Look at your home differently. Instead of just a place to live, think of your home as the following:
A space that teaches independence:
• Clear routines
• Predictable environments
• Opportunities to practice skills

Start thinking about the future. You don't need all the answers. But ask yourself:
What kind of life do I want for my child?

Not just where they will live. But how will they live?

Here is what I've learned from talking to families this month. It has been powerful. I've had conversations with parents who are

✔ Worried
✔ Overwhelmed
✔ Trying their best
✔ Looking for guidance

And I want you to hear this clearly:
* You are not behind.
* You are not failing.
*You are doing what you can with what you know.
And now… you’re learning more.

Now, parents and individuals have asked me, "Why do I do this Work?"

This isn’t just about real estate to me.
It’s about helping families create something that feels possible.
A future where your child can:
✔ Feel safe
✔ Feel confident
✔ Have some level of Independence

Even if it looks different from others…
It still matters.

So what Happens Next
