Our Social Media Comment Policy:

In order to engage students, educators, families, community partners, and the public in our daily work, ACSF maintains several social media platforms, including but not limited to Facebook and Instagram. ACSF encourages our students, educators, board, staff, supporters, partners, and the public to share comments which relate to a topic being discussed on any of ou

r social media platforms in a productive and non-threatening manner, and consistent with our values. ACSF accepts the majority of comments made on our platforms, and answers questions about our policies, programs, procedures, and protocols within a timely manner (within 48 business hours) as long as those questions are not in violation of the parameters outlined below. A question or comment will be deleted if it contains:
Hate speech
Profanity, obscenity or vulgarity
Defamation to a person or people
Name calling and/or personal attacks
Comments where the main purpose is to sell a product
Comments that are intended to be inflammatory
Comments that infringe on copyrights
Spam comments, such as the same comment posted repeatedly on a profile
Off-topic or irrelevant information
Comments that contain personal information about the author or another individual
Misinformation
Photographs that are offensive/graphic in nature

ACSF retains the right to determine which comments violate this policy and to remove such comments. Repeated violations of the ACSF Social Media Comment Policy may cause the author to be blocked from communicating on ACSF social media platforms. On ACSF private and public social media platforms, the views expressed within comments do not necessarily reflect those of ACSF. Links to other websites do not constitute endorsements of those sites by ACSF, and ACSF is not responsible for the content of external websites. By posting on a public ACSF social media platform, authors understand and acknowledge that posted information is public and may be used by ACSF for promotional and fundraising purposes.

Last week we celebrated the kickoff of our Annual Campaign with a week of gatherings, and you all SHOWED UP! Together, we reached our $8,000 kick-off goal!

At our kickoff event at , we heard from our students about what public education means to them and what it looks like to have the opportunity to lead, learn, and make an impact right now. We were also joined by Sara Howell and Ike Smith of , who helped us think about the moment we’re in and what it will take to keep showing up for public education.

We also gathered local business leaders for Education Is Everyone’s Business! Ginger Frank from and Ben Colvin from helped guide a conversation with NC Public Forum about how our business community can plug in, build meaningful partnerships, and support our young people and public schools.

Thank you all for supporting our work this year. We are just getting started.

This is Kyel and Kevin on the ACSF Freedom Ride.
Each year, ACSF takes 40+ students from our DREAM and REAP programs through Atlanta, Montgomery, Selma, and Birmingham to study the Civil Rights Movement and the people who shaped it. In March, students visited the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, the Legacy Museum, Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, and met Lisa McNair, sister of Denise McNair, one of the four girls killed in the 1963 bombing.

We looked closely at the role young people played in revolution, because young people have always been part of the fight for justice. They ask hard questions. They challenge what isn’t working. They imagine something better. They push movements forward.

Earlier this year, August traveled to Washington, D.C. 🏛️

In partnership with the North Carolina Center for Afterschool Programs, August, Walker (SILSA '26), and a group of educators met with lawmakers, lobbied for afterschool funding, and explained the impact of afterschool programs in North Carolina. He told stories about tangled fishing lines that eventually became students catching fish, learning patience, solving problems, and helping others. He talked about building chairs, learning to code and cook, mentoring younger students, and having a place to go after the bell.

Then he wrote about it in the Asheville Citizen Times! When you give young people real experiences and ask them what they think, you are letting them know that you trust their voice and ability to lead our community.

This is Tristan, behind the mic at VOX ATL on our Freedom Ride 2026.

Two years ago, REAP connected with .matters at the NAEF Conference. Since then, we’ve done some great work in partnership with YVM and VOX ATL - from youth facilitation and intergenerational power sharing to podcasts and short-form video.

When young people are given the space, tools, and platform to tell their own stories, they begin to shape the conversations happening around them.

“Look around, look around, at how lucky we are to be alive right now.”

That line from Hamilton is on the front of the letter you’ll find in your mailbox (and inbox) this week. Around it are five students in ACSF programming who have spent this year doing what public education prepares young people to do: show up, think critically, speak up, connect with their community, and lead.

The letter is from them. They’re telling you what these experiences have meant, why this work matters, and why they believe in investing in public education.

Our high school programs are already off to a great start! 💙

During the early part of last week, students had the opportunity to hear from Linda J. Holmes and engage in a meaningful conversation about education, community, and the work that we must continue.

Then over the weekend, students joined the Beginning of the Year Planning Party where Dr. Dudley Flood and REAP students helped kick off the new school year, bringing energy, perspective, and plenty of encouragement to the room. ✨✨
