Sustained by a passion for fiber, Local Cloth is a volunteer-led non-profit network of dedicated to growing the local fiber economy in Western North Carolina and increasing awareness of and access to regional production and artisan practices. We feature textile artists, designers, fiber farmers, suppliers and small businesses working to sustain a thriving local textile economy and bring locally grown and made fiber products to consumers within and beyond the Blue Ridge.

🧶 Opening today — come find Local Cloth in Booth #416 at the Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands! Hummingbird-filled felted wall pieces, mountain landscape quilts, naturally dyed scarves, felted hats, and so much more are waiting for you.

🏔️ For 93 years, the Southern Highland Craft Guild has championed the handmade traditions of our mountains — supporting artisans through marketing, education, shared resources, and the conservation of Appalachian craft. Local Cloth has been proud to be an educational member of the Guild since 2018, and we're grateful for everything it does for the makers and communities of Western North Carolina.

🎨 Ever wanted a paint that can do it all — crisp design work, soft washes, and bold opaque color? Meet gouache.

♥️ In Working with Gouache for Design and Painting, Local Cloth Instructor Camille Daunno will walk you through three ways to use this versatile medium as you create three finished pieces:
✏️ Using gouache for design work — composition and clean, flat color
💧 Painting like watercolor with soft, transparent washes
🖌️ Going thick and opaque like acrylic to build layers, texture, and depth
🌈 Color mixing, highlights, and fine details to bring each piece to life

🕶️ No experience needed — all paints and supplies are provided, so just bring your lunch and your curiosity!

♥️ In Fleece to Fiber, Local Cloth Instructor Kirsten Bonanza will walk you through the full journey from raw, unwashed fleece to spun yarn:
🫧 Washing and cleaning fleece without felting — temperature, technique, and drying
🧶 Spinning "in the grease" to see how fiber behaves before it's washed
✋ Opening, fluffing, combing, and hand carding your cleaned wool
🌀 Drafting and spinning your prepared fiber on a drop spindle or spinning wheel

🕶️ No experience needed — just curiosity and a willingness to get your hands a little woolly!

👻 It's also Spooky Saturday in the River Arts District! The RAD Second Saturday Spooky Saturday Art Festival brings a costumed art crawl, live music, pumpkin carving, and themed exhibitions to studios all across the district from 10am–5pm. Come in costume, make a pumpkin with us, and keep exploring the RAD all afternoon.

🏆 Congratulations to Rachel Watkins — winner of this year's Twelve-by-Twelve People's Choice Award for her piece, "My Jeopardy! Streak."

🧵 The piece is a one-year stitch-a-long — finished within the year, which Rachel says felt like a major winning streak for someone who loves starting ambitious projects but doesn't always finish one before the next idea comes along. Most of her stitching evenings began while watching Jeopardy! with family, shouting out answers between stitches — and the blue aida cloth reminds her of the show's classic blue wall of "answers."

💬 In Rachel's words: "A year of disciplined stitching gave me some answers of my own."

🪡 Needlework — Sulky 12wt. cotton thread on 14 ct. cotton aida.

🎨 Rachel is also our newest Resident Artist — stop by the Local Cloth Studio to see what she's working on.

❤️ Thank you to the 40 artists who shared their work, and to everyone who supported the Twelve-by-Twelve auction — every vote cast and every bid placed. Together, we raised $3,245, a new record for the show, in support of Local Cloth's work to grow and sustain our local fiber community.
