Empowering LGBTQ+ Community Through Skills and Service

A transformative two-day experience designed specifically for LGBTQ+ individuals to build skills, community, and make a lasting impact!

Workshop Schedule:
Day One: Power Tool Training
Sat, May 31st, 2025 (Beginners please attend, optional)
3:00 PM - 6:00 PM: LGBTQ+ Professional Power Tool Safety and Skills Workshop
-Comprehensive training on tool usage, safety protocols, and hands-on technique
-Expert instructors guiding you through proper tool handling and best practices

Day Two: Community Build Project
Saturday, June 7th, 2025
8:15-3:15 Habitat for Humanity Community Build
- Apply your newly learned skills in a meaningful community service project
- Work alongside LGBTQ+ volunteers
- Instructors present to provide guidance and support

Skills academy for women's chainsaw instructor Phil will be there answering questions and demonstrating best practices when operating a chainsaw. Come and learn from a certified arborist!

Many of you know that Asheville is recovering from the significant devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. Skills Academy for Women is meeting the urgent needs of our community by collecting chainsaws and gear and providing education on their safe and proper use. Here are some ways you can support these efforts. Links are in the bio.

Meet Quetzal Jordan (she/they), the founder of Skills Academy for Women! Quetzal started in the trades at age 16, working in landscaping, and then took on carpentry in her 20s. Her experience spans music and art, including working alongside conceptual artist, Mel Chin. With skills in carpentry, welding, masonry, and basic construction, Quetzal knows firsthand the challenges women face in these fields. That’s why she created S.A.W.—to break down barriers and build up an inclusive, empowering community where women and all people can thrive.

Meet Nya (she/they), an artist and Independent Contractor in Asheville and an instructor at SAW! Nya has recently co-facilitated S.A.W.’s Basic Power Tools Workshops. They have spent the last six years working to empower and train underrepresented folks in both museum exhibitions and carpentry trades. Nya is thrilled to continue learning and sharing knowledge while working with SAW. They are certified in first aid, forklift, and scissor lift operation. When not working, Nya enjoys spending time with their spouse and dogs, collecting vinyl, and working on new art pieces.
