The Digital Media Technology program prepares students for entry-level jobs in the digital design and multimedia industry. If you want to design websites, create animations, edit photos, create games, make films, and even do a little programming... then this is the program for you.

COMMUNICATIONS & TECHNICAL SPECIALIST
UU Asheville is seeking a half-time Communications and Technical Specialist. This position is an instrumental member of our team that manages our communications and provides technical expertise. Communications will include designing internal and external publications, assisting with our social media, updating website content, and assisting with community outreach/special events. Technical responsibilities include managing and operating our A/V and live steam equipment for all services, meetings, and events.
ABOUT UU ASHEVILLE
UU Asheville is a progressive, inclusive, and engaged congregation in Asheville, NC. We are a 480-member congregation of Unitarian Universalists that was chartered in Asheville in 1956. We have two full-time ministers, a Director of Administration, a part-time music director, an office manager, a connections coordinator, two religious exploration coordinators, and a limited number of part-time facility and youth staff. Our Unitarian Universalist congregation is explicitly (if imperfectly) anti-racist, LGBTQ+ affirming, and theologically diverse.
JOB DUTIES & EXPECTATIONS
General Responsibilities/Expectations
● Ability to engage with staff and volunteers in a collaborative and respectful manner ● Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently within a multi-
generational team of staff and volunteers
● Commitment to solution-oriented problem-solving, healthy interpersonal communication,
and a growth mindset to maintain a teachable and teaching spirit.
Communications 50% (approx. 10-12 hours per week)
● Create promotional materials to include flyers, brochures, ads, slides, graphic designs, etc. for both internal and external needs.
● Work closely with the Director of Administration for review and approval of materials to ensure content is accurate, messaging is aligned with our mission and values, and reflects our congregation appropriately with color palette, branding, copyright requirements, etc.
● Edit weekly e-news and programs/orders of service created by the office manager from content provided by staff and volunteers.
● Provide weekly edits/updates to the uuasheville.org website, with technical support from our contract webmaster. Lead a quarterly review of web pages to streamline content and reduce navigation steps to find information.
● Monitor and post Sandburg Hall bulletin boards
● Support all communications/production aspects of the Annual Budget Drive and
Membership Engagement/Care Connect marketing and promotional needs
● Assist in creating the Annual Report
● Assist with managing social media including regular posts to YouTube, Facebook,
Instagram, and other media as approved for use.
● Work collaboratively with all staff/volunteers as needed.
● Assist with the creation and updating of manuals, grant research, and grant writing.
● Act as staff photographer, documenting events and managing the photo/video collection.
● Assist with office coverage in the absence of other administrative staff.
Technical Specialist 40% (approx. 6-8 hours per week)
● Serve as technical director and be on-site operating all technical equipment for all Sunday worship services and holiday/special services, with the exception of 1 Sunday per month, as well as for the majority of events, meetings, or services that have A/V technical needs.
● Produce live in-person AND live stream worship experiences (we currently use vMix-to- YouTube or Zoom), in partnership with the worship or program leaders.
● Meet weekly with worship ministers, program leads, and musical director to gather content supplied by others, review materials, and rehearse the order of service or program components as needed for upcoming worship services, programs, or events.
● Create slides and other graphics, as well as video clips, to be incorporated into the production of worship services.
● Set, Test, and Strike all equipment required for worship, events, meetings, etc., including creating zoom meetings for volunteers who need assistance.
● Operate video mixer, soundboard, cameras, mics, computers, Livestream, and other equipment or operations as needed for a successful service, meeting, or event.
● Hire (as needed), schedule, lead, and train part-time paid and/or volunteer A/V techs for A/V needs related to Sunday worship services, Wednesday evening programming, and other programs as requested for coverage due to vacations, illness, the volume of events, or technical needs that require additional hands for successful productions.
● Purchase (as needed/approved) and maintain A/V equipment and asset inventory.
● Manage the congregation’s YouTube account.
● Video-record segments that either 1) will not be live for worship services or 2) will be used
for announcements on the website or in e-newsletters.
● Archive backups of content on playlists and designated servers.

Special Events 10% (approx. 2 hours per week)
● Attend community outreach and membership engagement programs, as well as special events as needed.
● Engage with members, guests, and the broader community at events we host or participate in within the community.
● Roles may vary at special events and could include providing informational materials and communicating with others about our congregation, providing support to other congregants or staff running or working at a special event, acting as staff photographer/videographer, A/V or technical needs, and/or assisting with set & strike for the event.
● Additional hours beyond the regular half-time position may be needed for special events and would be paid at the same rate.
● Other duties as assigned.
STRENGTHS AND SKILLS
● Demonstrated competencies in utilizing highly technical equipment, web content management tools, basic graphic design skills, presentation and document creation, strong writing skills, and the ability to master new technology, software, and social media quickly and thoroughly.
● Very strong organizational abilities, excellent writing/editing skills, as well as attention to detail.
● Skilled in setting up and mixing audio and working with Vmix or similar streaming and recording software with multiple cameras.
● Proficient in Windows, Google Workspace (G-suite), YouTube, Zoom, Wordpress (Divi experience would be amazing), PowerPoint and Google Slide, streaming, social media, Canva, and/or Adobe Creative Suite.
● Ability to be flexible in an environment that is subject to spur-of-the-moment change and possess a “whatever it takes” attitude.
JOB TITLE: Communications & Technical Specialist

START DATE: Early February
COMPENSATION: $25/hour, non-exempt, with pro-rated health and retirement benefits
WORK HOURS: This is a half-time position that has a blend of scheduled and flex hours which requires working some weekdays, evenings, and most Sunday mornings.
This position is on-site with occasional remote work opportunities. The position requires being on-site for nearly all worship services and other live-streaming events, including three Sundays per month. Office hours are necessary for meetings, collaborative work projects, and office

coverage. Some remote work may be approved for special projects and work requiring concentrated and uninterrupted focus.

*Scheduled days/hours may be negotiable (excluding Sunday mornings) based on the incumbent’s schedule, office hours, availability of key staff, and operational needs. Areas of focus may shift based on the time of year and hours may increase in some areas and be reduced in other areas.
