hich we collectively invest in the health our region. Project PROMISE selects rural high school seniors from Mountain Heritage and Mitchell who show interest in a healthcare profession. The program supports the students by providing exposure to real healthcare experience and offers mentorship throughout the program. Students who are accepted to the program will complete an internship where the students complete a shadowing experience with a wide variety of healthcare providers in Yancey and Mitchell counties, all while receiving school credits through the dual enrollment program at the high schools. Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) is assisting with the project as part of its WNC Rural Health Initiative. MAHEC is excited about further growing this project in the local communities which will strengthen the local pipeline to healthcare providers and also help entice students to select a career path in healthcare.
