Woodfin Elementary School

Woodfin Elementary School Welcome to Woodfin Elementary School, where Woodfin grows empowered problem solvers! The town of Woodfin has historically been a small, working class community.

Woodfin Elementary School currently serves 130 students in grades K-4 and houses the BCS Oasis Day Treatment program of 18 students, grades K-5. Woodfin School is one of forty-one schools that make-up the Buncombe County School System. Buncombe County rests in a central area of a high plateau bordered by the Blue Ridge, Great Craggy, and Black Mountains on the east and the Great Smoky Mountain Nat

ional Park of the Appalachians to the west. Our school, located in Woodfin, NC is a just north of Asheville in northern Buncombe County and is in the BCS Erwin School District. While manufacturing remains an important part of the Woodfin economy, in recent years there has been an increase of young professionals and families seeking a small community lifestyle, but still close to a larger town for fine dining, cultural and educational opportunities. Currently, Woodfin is a community of approximately 6,123 citizens and is home to businesses ranging from multi-million dollar companies to locally owned operations (2010 Census data).

We had a fabulous day today at Kindergarten Camp with everyone who was able to join us!!

We explored a lot together and met lots of new friends. We played on the playground, completed a school tour, sang and danced together and even created a name craft.

We can’t wait to see everyone again for Meet the Teacher on August 21st from 8am-10am.

The Woodfin Wolverines want to give a huge shout out to two amazing staff members. Mrs. Valerie Stiles will begin a new adventure in her educational career. She has served the families of Woodfin Elementary this past school year in fourth grade, Mrs. Stiles has been selected to serve as the new Assistant Principal of W.D. Williams Elementary School. We are so grateful for her time with us and know that she will be an amazing leader. Also, Mr.Lars Johnson who has been serving as our Exceptional Children's teacher is going to be moving into a new opportunity in Buncombe County Schools. He has led our Exceptional Children's department through amazing growth this past school year. His smiling face and positive presence will be missed tremendously. We wish him the best in his new journey.

Our Wolverine family will be welcoming back Mrs. Robin Francis. Mrs. Robin will become our new Exceptional Children’s teacher. Mrs. Robin filled in last year and will be returning to continue the amazing work that is occurring. We are very excited that she will be rejoining our team.

Meet Robin Francis (Ms. Robin)
I am excited to return to Woodfin Elementary as an Exceptional Children (EC) teacher in a role that is meaningful not only to our school community, but also to me personally. Last year, I had the privilege of serving Woodfin as a temporary EC teacher, substitute teacher, and reading /math coach. I am looking forward to building on the relationships I began with our students, families, and staff.
I have been an educator for more than 20 years and have taught in a variety of educational settings, including fourth grade in a parochial school, first grade in a public school, and first through third grades in a Montessori school. Each experience has strengthened my belief that every child has the ability to learn. As an educator, I see it as my responsibility to discover how each student learns best and provide instruction in a way that helps them understand, retain, and apply what they have learned.
One of my greatest professional interests is how the brain learns. I have been fortunate to attend several “Learning & the Brain” conferences sponsored by Harvard University, and I enjoy applying research-based strategies to help students become confident, successful learners.
My goal is to create a classroom where students feel safe to take risks, ask questions, and make mistakes without fear. I want every child to leave our lessons thinking, *"I can do this!"* Success is not about perfection. It is about giving your best effort, persevering through challenges, and continuing to grow. I hope to inspire curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning in every student I teach.
Outside of school, I have been happily married for 26 years. My husband and I share our home with three very spoiled cats. In my free time, I enjoy running, reading, and creating healthy plant-based meals. A fun fact about me is that I am ambidextrous!
I look forward to partnering with our Woodfin families for a wonderful year of learning, growth, and success.

The Woodfin Wolverines want to extend a huge welcome to Mrs. Brittany Whitson. She will be serving our Wolverine family as an Administrator Intern this school year. We cannot wait to have her on our team. Welcome Mrs. Whitson.

My name is Brittany Whitson and I will be serving as an administrator intern this school year at Woodfin Elementary. I am looking forward to getting to know the students, staff and families that make Woodfin the special community that it is. This will be my 11th year in education. I graduated from Mars Hill University in 2016 with a B.A. in Integrated Education and a minor in Business Administration. I hold a dual license in both K-6 Elementary Education and K-12 Special Education. I have previously taught 2nd grade, 3rd grade and Special Education grades K-4. I am currently pursuing a Masters in School Administration through Western Carolina University as a Principal Fellow; I will graduate in May of 2027! In my free time I like to spend time with my husband, 6 year old daughter and 9 month old son. I look forward to working with all Woodfin staff, students and families this school year as I complete my internship!
