🏆 2026 Alumni Awards Winner
Mullen-James Social Justice & Equity Impact Award
✨ Dr. Dan Pierce ✨
The Mullen-James Social Justice & Equity Impact Award honors alumni and community members whose work advances justice, equity, and meaningful change.
History isn’t always told. Sometimes it’s hidden. Dr. Dan Pierce, retired UNC Asheville history professor and founder of the Railroad and Incarcerated Laborer Memorial Project (RAIL), is changing that.
Through his work, nearly 3,000 incarcerated laborers, most of them African American, who were forced to build the railroad under Jim Crow laws, are finally remembered, honored, and given a voice. Their sacrifices shaped Western North Carolina, and with the work of Dr. Pierce, their stories will not be forgotten.
