Induction Week 2026 is winding down for all students and staff at French Broad River Academy. Our tradition is to get big group photos of the Boys and Girls Programs not long after they arrive for the week. It was a record turnout Wednesday for the 2026 Lucas Memorial Float Trip, the annual paddle on the French Broad River honoring the life and legacy of Peter and Daniel Lucas, father and brother of French Broad River Academy founding board member Greg Lucas. The annual event raises funds for the Lucas Scholarship Fund, awarded to a student who demonstrates financial need and the desire to enroll for all three middle school years at French Broad River Academy. The float was followed by our annual Back to School Potluck Picnic, where students and their families met new friends, reconnected with old ones, and spent time with FBRA teachers and staff ahead of the launch of Induction Week on Monday.

With August winding down, it's a blast to look back on some of the many adventures our students and instructors had together through French Broad River Academy's summer programming. It was an epic season of fun challenges in the outdoors — from learning the basics of kayaking on mountain rivers, backpacking and practicing backcountry living skills deep in the national forest, mountain biking some of the region's best singletrack, to climbing and building new rope and technical skills in Kentucky's world-renowned Red River Gorge. These memorable summer experiences extend FBRA's in-school outdoor curriculum, allowing campers to explore areas further afield and continue honing their skills.

Rising 6th graders at French Broad River Academy recently wrapped up their Summer Swim Clinic, spending 10 hours in the pool at the UNCA Justice Center and building foundational swimming skills. They worked on water safety, breathing techniques, and stroke development for front crawl, backstroke, and sidestroke, and also played some water games. Now, swimmers are confident and ready for the coming school year and all of FBRA's water-based activities. Well done, Salamanders!

It was a thrill to see the musicians who are a part of French Broad River Academy's music program performing at AVL Sounds Fest, the showcase of local, regional, and national musical acts held last weekend at venues across Asheville. Led by Ryan Furstenberg and Melissa Hyman, Heads of Music for the FBRA Boys and Girls Programs, this team of nine professional musicians helps all FBRA students learn foundations in guitar, piano, drums, vocals, and performance during their three-year middle school experience. Grateful to have so many talented artists from the vibrant Asheville music community teaching our students!
