What a great first week of MMMP! 🎉🤩

We’re so excited to kick off this journey with such an incredible group of students and can’t wait to see what lies ahead! This group has already shown us just how passionate they are about their futures, their goals, and making an impact in their careers. We’re so excited to watch them learn and grow!

Also, a huge thank you to Rachel Bemis for leading us through the Real Colors activity! 🎨
It was such a fun and insightful way to learn more about our own personalities, understand each others personalities, and recognize how our different strengths and communication styles can bring us together.

We couldn’t have asked for a better first week, and we’re just getting started! 💜

Here’s to an amazing year ahead!

Happy orientation day!

We are so excited to see our students here this afternoon. 🎉😁

Please join us in welcoming our final student, Maya Pattanayak!

"Hi, my name is Maya Pattanayak, and I’m a senior at Asheville High. I learned about M3P from a family friend. I am interested in surgery in some capacity, but I’m not sure exactly what specialty, so I hope M3P will help me to discover my calling. I want to use my medical education to provide care to underserved populations; working in rural communities in the US and in areas of conflict overseas. My interests outside of academics include swimming, weightlifting, baking, and thrifting clothes I don’t really need."

One more day until orientation day! 🎉

Today, we're introducing Mia Schmeltzer. 😊

"I am a senior at Nesbitt Discovery Academy. I learned about this program when a representative came to our school encouraging students to apply to this program if they were interested in the medical field. I am currently interested in a career in gynecology or pediatrics. I am hoping that this program will help me understand more about each medical profession and each different division of medicine that I might want to have a future career in."

Join us in welcoming another one of our upcoming MMMP students, Henry Ransom!🎉😊

"I go to school at Nesbitt Discovery Academy. I learn about MMMP through our school counselors who talked with interested students about the program and helped spread the information about applications. I'm interested in being a Physician, possibly pediatric, and I would also like to be involved in the research side of healthcare. I hope to be exposed to careers within the healthcare field that I didn't know existed, and that might open my eyes to jobs that fit my interests even better. Fun fact about me- I play tennis for Reynolds, and I love biking and running."

Happy first day of school to our students!! We hope you all have a fabulous week and we can't wait to see you on Thursday. 🎉😊

Today's MMMP student highlight is Samaria Fox!

"Hey! My name is Samaria Fox and I’m a senior at Nesbitt Discovery Academy. I learned about the MAHEC Medical Mentoring Program through my school and friends who share similar passions. I’m hoping to pursue a career in psychiatry as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. Some of my favorite hobbies include marching band/indoor percussion, thrifting, and collecting records. While apart of the MMMP, I hope to learn not only about my desired field, but all of the other medical fields and why they’re so important to our world. I’m beyond excited to be a part of this program and to discover what is in store for the future!"

We are so excited to welcome our newest cohort of the MAHEC Medical Mentoring Program, who will be starting next Thursday! 🎉

Over the next week, we'll be introducing our Fall cohort and sharing a little bit about who they are, and what inspires them as they begin their journey with us.

Join us in giving them a warm welcome as we count down to orientation day. 🥳

Let's begin our welcome with Arianna Lott!

"I go to school at Nesbitt Discovery Academy. I learned about MMMP through the MAHEC Passport Program! I am interested in Anesthesiology, and I hope to learn about patient-healthcare provider interaction and niche sub fields of the healthcare world that are often overlooked. Fun fact: I love glitter (the more the better!)"

Exploring the future of healthcare, one experiential leaning trip at a time! 🩺

We had the pleasure of bringing the City of Asheville Youth Leadership Academy (CAYLA) interns to for a day of college and career exploration. CAYLA students toured campus, connected with faculty and staff in the College of Health and Human Services, and participated in hands-on learning experiences that showcased the many pathways into healthcare.

Experiences like these help students envision what is possible, connect their interests with future careers, and take meaningful steps toward achieving their goals.

A heartfelt thank you to for welcoming our students and creating such an engaging experience, and to our partners at CAYLA for making opportunities like this possible. Together, we are helping inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Investing in the future of healthcare, one adventure at a time!

Last Tuesday (June 16), we had an incredible day at MAHEC hosting rising 8th and 9th graders from the Horizons Summer Camp for a hands-on day Health Careers Enrichment Day! Here is how the students spent their day:

We kicked things off with an engaging, moderated panel featuring our MedServe Fellows. The students got a firsthand look at various health career pathways and heard the inspiring personal journeys that led our fellow to healthcare.

Next, our amazing Simulation Center Team took learning outside! The students jumped into action with interactive wilderness first aid activities, learning crucial life saving skills, in a fun, real-world setting.

From the classroom to the outdoors, these students brought their curiosity and open minds to the day. The future of healthcare is looking bright!
