Odyssey Community School Educating Asheville's finest free-thinkers | PreK-12th grade

Odyssey is an independent PreK–12 school nestled on a lush, 5.8-acre forested campus in Asheville, NC. Rooted in creativity, arts integration, and whole-child education, Odyssey offers an innovative and nurturing environment for students to thrive—academically, emotionally, and socially. Our mission is to prepare students, families, and educators to lead with purpose, resilience, and an authentic sense of self in the 21st century. Odyssey’s Integral Education model weaves together six key strands of human development: physical, emotional, mental, moral, spiritual, and aesthetic. By integrating these with the principles of Nonviolent Communication (NVC), we empower students to grow as compassionate, confident learners and engaged citizens.

Our 3rd and 4th graders took a trip to Cherokee, NC, for an unforgettable day at the Oconaluftee Indian Village! 🌿 Cherokee Adventure

Students stepped into Cherokee history and culture, exploring traditional sweat lodges, experiencing Indigenous dance, discovering traditional crafts, and learning about the daily lives and traditions of the Cherokee people.

A day full of curiosity, hands-on learning, and a deeper appreciation for the rich history and living culture of our Cherokee neighbors. Definitely a field trip to remember! ❤️

Our Kindergarteners had the sweetest fall day at Sky Top Orchard ! 🍎🍂 They visited the animals, rode the tractor, picked (and taste-tested) plenty of delicious apples, and got to spend the day adventuring with friends.

But let’s be honest—the most important part of the field trip was eating apple c***r donuts. 🍩

Two years ago today, we lost our beloved teacher and friend, Shirley Rotolo.

Shirley helped shape Odyssey into the school and community it is today. Her spirit, her wisdom, her love for our students, and the countless ways she gave herself to this place are woven into the fabric of who we are.

We miss her every day, but especially today. And we’re reminded that the people who help build a community like ours never really leave it. They live on in the traditions they started, the students they loved, the teachers they inspired, and the lives they touched.

Today, we honor Shirley with so much love and gratitude. She will forever be part of Odyssey, and forever in our hearts. ❤️

At Odyssey, we believe education should nurture the whole child. Our Six Strands: Aesthetic, Mental, Emotional, Moral, Spiritual, and Physical, are woven throughout the student experience, shaping not only what children learn, but how they understand themselves, connect with others, and move through the world.

PEACE. LOVE. COMMUNITY. ✌️❤️🌱

What. A. Day.

Our students ran their hearts out in the Fun Run (rocking their Odyssey shirts!), we ate ridiculously delicious pizza made by our very own high school science teacher Andrew Rabin with dough provided by Asheville Brewing Company watched the legendary Tavi Does Stuff light up the lawn with fire dancing, shopped and ate our way through an incredible group of local vendors like The Hop Ice Cream and Tater K**b Farm and celebrated everything that makes this community so special.

And the best part? We did it all for our school. 💛
It takes a village to keep the magic of Odyssey thriving—and our village SHOWED UP.

To every student, family, teacher, vendor, volunteer, donor and friend who gave, ran, cooked, danced, shopped, celebrated and supported us: THANK YOU.
