"Our children/students deserve to know and respect the names behind the technology they use every day. Dr. Gladys West, the mathematician whose work made GPS possible, passed away on January 17, 2026, at age 95. Her journey—from a small farm to the National Inventors Hall of Fame—serves as a powerful bridge between classroom learning and real-world impact. Let’s commit to sharing her story to help our children see the greatness within themselves and others." Visit www.BlackMiracles.com

Grant, a keen golfer, created and patented a golf tee in 1899 as a result of frustration. When playing the first stroke of a hole from the teeing ground, the golf tee is the small piece of equipment that lifts the golf ball off the ground. To put it another way, Grant’s invention gave golfers more control over their clubs, as well as the speed and direction of their drives. Despite this, it took nearly a century for the late-nineteenth-century Boston dentist, who also made history at Harvard, to be recognized for his invention.

Also in that year, the United States Electric Company bought the patent for this invention.

The technology has also been used in blood pressure readings and in the United States space program. Cell phones, computers, hearing aids, and audio recording equipment are all used now.

He had a rare skill and mastery of electronic appliances and devices, and the surprising thing was that his expertise was self-taught. He would later gain employment aboard a steamship outside of the USA.
