Today (August 9) is the International Day of the Worldโs Indigenous Peoples.
Itโs a day to honor the cultures, traditions, and deep-rooted histories of Indigenous communities around the world โ communities that have existed long before modern borders and governments.
Indigenous Peoples make up over 475 million people across the globe. They speak more than 4,000 languages, belong to over 5,000 distinct groups, and steward land that holds 80% of the worldโs biodiversity โ despite making up just 6% of the global population.
And yetโฆ their rights continue to be violated. Many still face discrimination, poverty, land dispossession, and political marginalization.
This day is not just about celebration โ itโs also about awareness. It's about listening, learning, and standing in solidarity with Indigenous voices, histories, and futures.
