โ˜€๏ธ The Solstice is this weekend!

In the Northern Hemisphere, that means the Summer Solstice...the longest day and shortest night of the year AND the astronomical start of summer.

But here's something worth knowing: it's not the start of summer for everyone. ๐ŸŒฟ

For Neo-Pagans, the Solstice is one of 8 holydays on the Wheel of the Year, but summer actually began back on May 1 with Beltane. The Solstice (often called Litha) marks midsummer, not the beginning.

And if you're in the Southern Hemisphere? This weekend is your Winter Solstice...the shortest day and longest night of the year.

๐ŸŒ Light or dark, the Solstice is sacred across traditions and across the globe.

What does the Solstice mean in your family or tradition? Drop it in the comments! ๐Ÿ‘‡

Southern Baptists advance ban on women serving as pastors 06/11/2026

Not surprising, but certainly disappointing...in an ongoing kind of way. So many adjectives here...short-sighted, retrogressive, outmoded, anachronistic.

There is literally a Barbie movie about the negative effects of silencing 1/2 the population.๐Ÿ˜•

Southern Baptists advance ban on women serving as pastors The vote is the first step toward banning women from teaching scripture or preaching to churches within the nation's largest Protestant denomination.

๐ŸŽ‰ Quiz Time! Test your Sikhism/Sikhi knowledge!

Did you know there are 10 human Gurus in Sikhism/Sikhi?

Here's something fascinating: Sikhs commemorate each Guru three times a year. ๐Ÿค”

Can you guess why?

Hint: The commemorations are tied to life events.

Here are the three occasions honored for each Guru ๐Ÿ‘‡
๐ŸŒŸ The Guru's Physical Birth
โญ The Guru's Physical Death
โญ Installation as Guru

That's 10 Gurus ร— 3 commemorations = 30 sacred observances woven throughout the Sikh year!

This week, some Sikhs are commemorating the Guru installation of Hargobind Ji, the 6th human Guru in the tradition. ๐Ÿ™

These kinds of observances are such a beautiful window into how a faith community honors its teachers and its history...exactly the kind of tangible, meaningful connection I love sharing with kids (and their grown-ups!).

๐Ÿ’ฌ Did you already know this about Sikhism/Sikhi? Drop a ๐Ÿ™‹ in the comments if this is new to you!

Just a few photos from our recent Vesak celebration here in AVL. It is celebrated at different times in different countries, but it's generally on a full moon date in May/June. This particular ceremony brought together several different local sanghas, and this was the day when everyone could be there. So, June 6th it was!

๐ŸŒ Why I don't teach kids about beliefs...and what I teach instead.

As the founder of World Religions 4 Kids, I've spent years helping kids of all ages (and their grown-ups!) explore the world's religions.

But here's something that might surprise you: I rarely focus on belief systems. Here's why ๐Ÿ‘‡
โ†’ Beliefs are abstract. Even elementary-aged kids can grasp concepts like beauty and fairness, but religious belief systems often try to capture ideas that are genuinely hard for anyone to fully articulate.
โ†’ Beliefs are deeply personal. There are traditional teachings, of course, but what any individual actually believes, and how they live those beliefs out, varies enormously. Especially in traditions with billions of followers.

So what do I focus on? โœจ

Tangible things.

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Ritual objects
๐Ÿ‘˜ Special clothing
๐Ÿ•Œ Sacred spaces
๐Ÿ“… Holy days
๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Food

And every step of the way, I teach kids to avoid stereotypes.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What tangible part of a religious tradition has always fascinated you? Drop it in the comments!

๐Ÿ™ A huge thank you to Kayla Berkey and the UCC for this feature!

The United Church of Christ spotlighted my Guinness World Record for visiting the most places of worship in one month... 185 total! ๐ŸŒ

When I was in Chicago, I visited 10 UCC churches, and those visits held a special place in my heart. I recently served as the Children's Minister at Land of the Sky UCC in Asheville, NC, so walking into UCC spaces felt like coming home in the most unexpected ways.

Some of the connections genuinely stopped me in my tracks ๐Ÿ’›

โœ๏ธ A minister at St. Peter's UCC in Skokie turned out to be the mother of one of my former undergraduate students
โœ๏ธ A minister at First Congregational Church in Evanston was ordained in the same class as the Land of the Sky UCC minister
โœ๏ธ I attended a Sunday service at Church of the Three Crosses, where a current Land of the Sky UCC parishioner once served as minister

The article also highlighted some of the beautiful interfaith moments from my journey, including the Blessing of Lake Michigan that began at St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church.
