Heads up! Traffic Change Coming Soon!

Our amazing neighbor, the YWCA, is beginning a major construction project to replace their pool, which has been out of commission for several years. The YWCA was a supportive community partner when our new AMS facility was built ten years ago, and we are glad to work alongside them as they make these great improvements to their campus. Additionally, our IRL afterschool program has been unable to offer any swimming options for their clubs since the pool went offline a few years ago.

While this project is exciting for our neighborhood, crane operations will impact our normal traffic flow. Please review the important details below to help keep drop-off and pick-up running smoothly.

Traffic Impact Window
Dates: September 14 – September 25, 2026
Closure: The main car loop entrance to AMS will be closed for crane setup.

Temporary Car Loop & Campus Access
-Reroute Path: Vehicles must enter campus from S. French Broad Ave, turn onto Timothy St, and then turn onto Charles St.
-Temporary Campus Entry: Student drop-off and pick-up will continue to take place at the front of the school off Charles St.

Truck & Construction Restrictions
To protect our traffic flow during peak hours, the YMCA is prohibiting deliveries and specific operations during our morning drop off and afternoon pick up windows.

We appreciate your patience, flexibility, and extra caution around campus while this work is completed! Please reach out if you have any questions.

Our first week at Asheville Middle School was all about connection, belonging, and shared expectations. Through daily Crew time, students played games and built common norms for how we support each other. Grade levels also met with their Assistant Principals to dive into our Habits of Character: Respect, Collaboration, Engagement, Accountability, and Revision. We are ready for a joyful, collaborative year ahead.

🌱 Roots of Resilience: Mapping Our Local Foodshed 🌱

Asheville Middle School’s newest CTE course — Exploring Animal and Plant Science — is getting hands-on with Western North Carolina’s food system! 7th and 8th graders are using ASAP’s Local Food Guide to research and pin real WNC farms, markets, and food producers on a classroom map. By mapping our local foodshed, students are tracing where our food actually comes from — from Hickory Nut Gap Farm in Fairview (beef, pork, and chicken!) to dozens of other farms across the region — building a visual, physical understanding of the local foodshed that feeds our community.

This project connects directly to the course’s mission: growing the next generation of agriculturally literate, community-minded students rooted in Southern Appalachian food traditions and real relationships with local growers. 🚜🗺️

Afternoon Car Line 101: Asheville Middle School Edition!

With the first day of school just two days away this Monday, let’s make sure dismissal runs smoothly and safely for everyone! Here’s a quick refresher on how our car line works:

The Basics

-Two Lanes: Use both lanes on our one-way drive.
-Loading Zone: Pickup is only between the two front crosswalks.
-Hold On Moving: Cars MUST stay completely stationary while students load! Moving early—even after your child gets in—creates a dangerous domino effect for other students crossing.
-Follow Staff Signals: A staff member will hold up a stop sign until all cars in the batch are loaded before waving traffic forward.
-Child Not There? You can pause at the front crosswalk for one full rotation. If they’re still not out, pull into the parking lot to wait. (Note: Do NOT skip the car line and head straight to the parking lot!)

Pro Tips for Parents & Students
📱 Stay Connected: Students can use their phones to wait for your text when you're close! Tell them what car to look for.
👀 Stay Alert: Remind your child to stand on the sidewalk and actively look for your vehicle.
✋ Let Staff Direct: Please don't wave children across traffic yourself—our crosswalk staff will signal when it's safe!

Let’s keep our Cougar family safe and traffic moving! See you Monday morning!
