Many people move through life never truly feeling heard or understood — and that comes at a cost. Stephen Covey described being deeply understood as “the psychological equivalent of air,” because when we experience it, the nervous system settles, we feel supported, and we no longer feel alone.
This is at the heart of presence in coaching: listening as sacred witness — so clients feel genuinely heard and understood in their experience.
Presence is the foundational competency of whole-system coaching because it creates the conditions for safety, trust, and meaningful movement to occur.
It’s one of the core capacities we’ll explore in our upcoming Fundamentals of Coaching series, alongside Attunement and Illumination — not as techniques to perform, but as embodied practices to cultivate.
