Asheville Empire Lacrosse came to teach students at Oakley Elementary School all about the game of Lacrosse. Students learned so much and had so much fun! Big thanks to Empire Lacrosse and to Physical Education teacher, Sha-Teisa Sharpe, for bringing this opportunity to her students!

Last week, the 9th grade health and PE classes at T.C. Roberson High School were introduced to the fundamentals of floor hockey. Students learned key terminology and practiced basic skills associated with the sport. Physical education teacher, Justin Pike, chose this unit to help familiarize students with Olympic-style sports as the Winter Olympics approach.

đđđđKoontz Intermediate Schoolâs Canaan Frisby has been named the Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year by NC SHAPE, the North Carolina Society for Health and Physical Education.
âWe are proud to recognize Mr. Frisby for his singular efforts in creating a fantastic physical education program for the students of Koontz Intermediate,â said NC SHAPE President Dr. Teri Schlosser. âThe individuals selected as Physical Education Teachers of the Year reflect the highest quality of professional excellence and dedication.â
Mr. Frisby is a âhomegrownâ BCS educator, graduating from North Buncombe High School and returning to teach after college. Heâs served students since 2018 at the Progressive Education Program and Johnston Elementary before coming to Koontz in 2023.
âI want to thank my amazing students,â Mr. Frisby shared. âThey come in ready to learn and engage in lessons every day. Iâm also appreciative of the many mentors and colleagues over the years that have helped guide me on my path.â

Each year, Physical Education teachers Tami Ramsey and Todd Suarez provide students at Enka Intermediate with an outstanding bike unit. Itâs wonderful to see students gain confidence and develop new skillsâsome even learning to ride for the first time! Huge shoutout to Tami and Todd for making learning fun and active! đđ´ââď¸

At Emma Elementary last week, 1st and 2nd grade students were each given their own bike to take home. CanâdAid is the amazing company that provided the bikes! CanâdAid provides tools and access for communities to lead healthy, active and creative lifestyles. Jeff Lenosky led the students in a motivational talk about achieving goals and always pursuing your dreams. Students learned about bike safety and how to properly fit a helmet. Jeff also showed off his bike skills, even jumping over a few teachers. Thank you, CanâdAid, for this gracious gift!!

Last week at Candler Elementary School, Physical Education teacher, April Puett, led students through a team building activity! The students worked as a team, collaborated and problem-solved, and successfully completed the challenge! It was awesome to watch!

Students at North Buncombe High School have been learning all about Pickleball this week! Students have competed in partner play, learned how to fill out tournament brackets and how to follow along the double elimination tournament process!

Students in Jennifer Corbin's Physical Education classes at North Buncombe High School learned all about archery this week!
"Our students developed and refined their motor skills, safety awareness, focus and self management skills during our mini unit of archery. It was the first archery unit ever at NBHS, which we plan to continue each semester!"-Jennifer Corbin

T.C. Roberson High School Physical Education classes have been having fun while learning net and wall games! Last week they played bam ball and this week they are on to pickleball. Pickleball has been such a hit they have students starting a pickleball club afterschool!

Buncombe County Center for Career Innovation Physical Education students attended the UNCA vs. Furman volleyball match today. In addition to enjoying the match, students explored a variety of career opportunities within the collegiate sports environment. They identified potential pathways in coaching, officiating, audiovisual and tech support, as well as facilities and maintenanceâgaining valuable insight into the many roles that contribute to the success of college athletics.
