𝐒𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄!!!

Last Saturday (𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑) with the help of a few volunteer participants, and my husband Mike Cooper, I did a soft launch on my newest company 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐲 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐲™… The vision was to someday offer leadership workshops using horses as the co-facilitators…And, last Saturday was the as good a day as any for it to be “someday”…So, under threatening skies, and a full 𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐑 𝐀𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐃 𝐎𝐅 𝐒𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐃𝐔𝐋𝐄, we gave our first equine facilitated leadership workshop. To my amazement, everything went really well…The horses rose to the challenge like the well trained stars that they are…And, no, there’s no modesty in that sentence, nor should there be…I know 𝐅*** 𝐀𝐋𝐋, about training horses, and what I’ve been able to accomplish using nothing more than sound coaching from a few people in the know (Jessica Fry, Mark Rashid) and my intuition, has netted me some great results, and helped to guarantee that my program will not only teach humans well, but will also be gentle on my horses…If you know anything about equine facilitated learning you know the learning can often come at the expense of the horses, as the humans taking the workshop usually know nothing about horses or how to handle and communicate with them…Therefore, it’s important that the horses have the right disposition and training so that the experience is as stress free as possible for them. Not only did the horses pass their first test, but the humans did too…The workshop was deemed fun, educational and a “great way to spend a day. ⁣

So, who cares? Why mention it now?⁣

I’m posting about it today, because there’s a lesson in here…⁣

What started as a germ of an idea three and a half years ago, has grown into a wonderful new adventure for Mike and me, and has filled our life with amazing horses, wonderful people and a renewed sense of purpose for both of us. Although, when this started a few years back, I was warned by people in the know against taking on such a huge undertaking,…The responsibilities of owning and caring for horses on your property, combined with the complexities of running this type of business would be overwhelming for a seasoned horse person, never mind a novice like myself. To be fair, the advice wasn’t completely without merit…Afterall, at the time, I had barely ever even been on a horse, much less taken care of one, but I leased my first horse and started on the journey anyway…And they weren’t wrong either, those well intentioned naysayers…Caring for horses properly is a huge investment in time, money and energy. I could make a fulltime job out of just the care and training of our horses, especially since I know next to nothing about either of those things. But I was called to action, and I always answer the call, despite the obvious obstacles.⁣

And the horses are just part of the complications…We literally had to convert or property into a horse ranch AND training facility…During lockdown!!! We also had to commit to learning how to care for horses, how to train them, and how to rehab them as well, as our horses are rescue animals. And yet, despite all the warnings…Despite all of the circumstances…Despite the obstacles, the expenses, and the limitations we faced…We opened a year ahead of schedule…Don’t get me wrong…We have a long way to go before this is a profitable business…But we’ll get there…Because, the one thing I know for sure (and teach every day) is that 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐍𝐎 𝐂𝐈𝐑𝐂𝐔𝐌𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐎 𝐄𝐗𝐈𝐒𝐓 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐓𝐎 𝐄𝐗𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝗪𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝗪𝐀𝐍𝐓…No matter how the odds are stacked against you, there’s nothing you can’t accomplish with the right amount of commitment, determination and (of course) intuition…⁣
