Our story:

I believe creativity is a skill we all possess. Yet the dominant forms of education do not adequately value these skills. By encouraging and developing imagination, creativity, innovation, critical thinking and intuition, students are better equipped to thr

ive in life. This is why I started Roots + Wings School of Art and Design. I moved with my husband and our two young children to Asheville in 2006. I was disheartened that in a city that so deservedly prides itself for its vibrant culture of creativity, and talented artists and artisans, that so little art education opportunities were being offered to the local community – especially children. As a mother and educator, I know that children have a boundless capacity for creative expression. But if it is not nurtured, it will wither. Roots + Wings School of Art and Design was founded in 2009 to rise to that challenge. Like many businesses, the COVID pandemic (2020-23) really tested us. In order to still meet our core mission and high standards, we needed to overhaul, evolve, and reevaluate every facet of our school. The downturn stretched us financially, and in the process, we lost a host of important programs, a wealth of qualified staff and other programs that had to shift and morph. Our world, our school, life itself, had changed in ways I could not fix. To that end, I closed Roots + Wings School of Art and Design at the end of the 2022-23 school year. As I look back over the last 14 years, I am very proud of what Roots + Wings and our talented and dedicated staff has meant to the thousands of kids that have come through these doors as preschool students, after-school & in-school programs, summer creativity camps and community programming. I truly believe that we’ve given our students a new appreciation and confidence for their own creative voice, in whatever form that may take. As we move beyond June 2023, I will carry on our foundational creative work with schools, educators and businesses locally, regionally, and beyond. My dream is to continue to inspire unique ways that students of all ages can creatively grow and experience the power of art and design to promote positive and significant changes within themselves and their communities. Surrender : Embrace is Ginger Huebner’s new solo show that marks the beginning of a new chapter as she shifts as director of the school she founded in 2009, Roots + Wings School of Art and Design, to full time artist and creative facilitator. This body of work emerged from the challenges and struggles that so many have faced over the last few years. The pieces represent a leaning into–an embracing of–the surrender of control of what is to come. The works are structured by edges and pathways of the natural world that act as touch points for her layers of color using the medium of chalk pastel. Huebner offers a new way of seeing what is possible in the face of struggle, giving viewers a sense of hope for what lies ahead. ✨September 29-October 29, 2023✨

Our Kids Art + Design classes start next week! Join Ginger these fun and engaging classes for ages 5-10. Small groups of students will explore drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and mixed media in various scales each class! Classes are limited to 6 students and meet in Ginger’s studio - Suite 3 - at the R+W Creative Campus at 573 Fairview Road in Asheville.

Ages 4-7 - Tuesdays from 4:00 - 5:15pm
September 5, 12, 26 + October 3 (no class Sept. 19)

Ages 7-10 - Wednesdays from 4:00 - 5:15pm

Join Ginger for her one-on-one Portfolio Development Intensives.

Students meet with Ginger for a total of 8 hours; customizing the schedule based on availability of Instructor and Student. Weeks do not need to be consecutive.

OUR AMAZING GRACE
Grace was part of our Roots + Wings family as an instructor for our After-school Community Design Lab program. She brought hope, confidence, and peace to her students and encouraged them to take risks and stay curious.

In 2016 we sadly lost her from this earth. Today is her birthday.

Grace was such an inspiration and touched so many lives, and we believe that her legacy of love and light lives on in so many ways.

In our Roots + Wings community, our scholarship fund was renamed the Grace Eaton Scholarship Fund in honor of Grace as a way to continue to share her gifts. This fund will continue to support giving back to families and communities through Ginger's Create + Connect Experiences partnering with Habitat for Humanity and other organizations.

There is never an easy way to heal from a loss such as this, but we are forever grateful to have Grace live on in our Roots + Wings family and beyond as the foundation of giving back to others.

Suite 4 has a beautiful storefront entry off of the parking lot, an incredible mural, sound system set up, and a custom built desk system that is available to purchase with your lease if desired!
