Ann-Marie McBride has been named BCS School Social Worker of the Year.
Her colleagues say Ann-Marie has a huge heart for service and has spent her career working to make a difference for families. She has also been a mentor for fellow school social workers.
The Student Services Surprise Squad of BCS Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jamie Johnson, Student Services director Shanon Martin, and assistant director Holly Houchard surprised Ms. McBride with the news when they popped in on her at Weaverville Primary, with a chorus of cheering kindergarteners.
Ann-Marie McBride also serves students at Weaverville Primary and Weaverville Elementary schools. Principals from all three schools joined the Student Services team to celebrate.

❤For 25 years, Shelly Roeder has dedicated her career to supporting students and families as a school social worker. For the past decade, she has called Clyde A. Erwin High home, where her compassion, commitment, and steady presence have made a meaningful difference in the lives of countless students.
Each day, Roeder works behind the scenes and on the front line to ensure students have the resources, encouragement, and support they need to be successful both in and out of the classroom. Whether she is helping connect families with services, supporting students through difficult moments, or simply offering a listening ear, Roeder’s work is rooted in care and understanding.
She says the heart of her job is making sure every student feels valued.
“I love helping students feel seen and heard,” she said. “I’m grateful to be a part of the Erwin community and to work with such incredible students and staff every day.”
Her colleagues see that dedication firsthand.
Assistant Principal Stefanie Hill said Shelly’s impact reaches across the entire school community.
“Shelly is a tireless advocate for our students and works relentlessly to make sure they have what they need to be successful,” Ms. Hill said. “She makes Erwin a better place because she is deeply invested in our students and school community.”
During National School Social Worker Week, Buncombe County Schools (BCS) proudly celebrates professionals like Shelly Roeder who help remove barriers, support student well-being, and strengthen connections between schools, families, and the community.
Thank you Shelly and to all the school social workers across BCS for the compassion, advocacy, and care you bring to students every single day.

College Application Week Begins Next Monday, October 20, 2026!
Oct. 20, 7:30 am - Oct. 26, 5:00 pm
This is the 20th year that NC colleges and universities will be waiving application fees during College Application Week (CAW).
Make sure your students are able to view the list of participating institutions so they can take advantage of fee waivers. Schools not on this list may accept fee waivers from other sources, so students need to check with each institution.
If you are experiencing technical issues during CAW, submit a ticket through the Technical Assistance Form on CFNC.org. Students should not use the technical assistance form for password or login issues.
