On June 4, 1919, the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution was passed by Congress. This amendment, ratified on August 18, 1920, gives all American women all the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, including the right to vote. The amendment was the culmination of a 72-year struggle against the systemic disenfranchisement of women. At YWCA of Asheville, we celebrate this hard-won right, and acknowledge that the struggle is not yet over.
