Did you know that Civil Rights Activist Pauli Murray stayed at YWCA Harlem when she was attending Hunter College? This month we honor her legacy and contributions to our society and are proud to have played a small role in her journey.

Today, we are celebrating Audre Lorde as part of Pride Month. She was a le***an feminist, poet, and activist who used her voice to fight against racism, sexism, and homophobia. Her legacy reminds us to stand tall in our truth and advocate for justice and equality for all. Happy Pride Month!

On June 4, 1919, the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution was passed by Congress. This amendment, ratified on August 18, 1920, gives all American women all the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, including the right to vote. The amendment was the culmination of a 72-year struggle against the systemic disenfranchisement of women. At YWCA of Asheville, we celebrate this hard-won right, and acknowledge that the struggle is not yet over.
