Would you rather a disc be easy to insert or easy to remove? You have to pick one!

The easiest discs to insert available at Period Nirvana are the Flex Disc reusable and the Fillow Disc with Applicator. They’re each easy for different reasons. The narrow tip of the Flex disc makes to very easy to insert for anyone struggling with size or folding issues. The Fillow disc comes with a disc applicator so if you struggle to reach for insertion or otherwise feel you can’t fold and insert a disc, the applicator can help.

The easiest to remove discs available at Period Nirvana include Hello Disc and Poppins Period. Hello Disc was designed with easy removals in mind and the loops can be worn various ways, all of which make them easy to find and pull to remove. Poppins Period has a wide band handle that is reachable to use at the time of removal versus pulling out by the rim. Both options should reduce or eliminate much or all of the mess that can come with fishing around and removing a disc.

Pack an amazing order with me while I share the story of our terrible weekend event. Events are WORK. Especially for a store like ours with so many products. Even this event, one we opted to carry less out for, takes hours of prep to plan for, to load in and set up for, to staff, and to break down. We all knew rain was in the forecast and I told the team to dress accordingly and prep. The wind…. that was beyond what was expected. We struggle with the weight of our tent weights but I guess we need to double or triple them! If you see the radar you will notice how the winds converged right over downtown Asheville. It could have been far worse, someone could have been injured or we could have lost our entire inventory. Other vendors did lose everything who were at the same event so I know we were still lucky. Florence and Ada quickly put away as much as possible and threw up our sidewalls. They got soaking wet in the process. I am genuinely so lucky to have a team that cares so much!

The storm was intense but fast and I decided to stay in hopes folks would come out after the rain. They didn’t. We all worked so hard for this (and every) event. Sales this week in the store and online have been an all time low so a losing nearly $500 to be at this event stung a little extra. I’m not too proud to say I had a good cry after I filmed this video. I’m barely hanging on and spinning wheels and have no idea if and how to turn things around for us. We worked a lot of in person events to promote our store location in hopes of raising awareness. But if the people aren’t there we are just paying to hang out downtown. Rain is always on the table. Not all events go according to plan. But I’d really like a win this year and time is ticking. I’m seriously reconsidering doing any events after Blue Ridge Pride in September. My whole team is over it. We have a store - please just come to us 🥲🫠

School is back in session (or starting any day now) - is your preteen/teen prepared with period essentials? If not we have ideas for the perfect period emergency kit to have prepped and ready in their backpack. As much as we’d like to think the schools are prepared they aren’t always. As parents it’s up to us to make sure our kids are fully prepared and comfortable when away from home just in case.

First we LOVE these shark pouches for “shark week supplies” and each shark does several pads and tampons plus a few small extra items!
1. Cramp relief stick on patches - discreet under clothes and helps soothe those aches when they strike 2. Lola Liners - have organic liners on hand for irregular spotting or stock their fav pads
3. August tampons - if your child prefers tampons this is a great brand that our young customers love
4. Saalt wipes - wipes are always nice to have if your cycle starts and you need a little clean up away from home.
5. Extra underwear - have extra underwear and even a change of shorts in the ready. If they’re period un**es like Saalt Teen they do double duty.

Other nice items to stock you probably have at home - a spare plastic bag for any stained clothes to bring home plus some ibuprofen!

When your period first begins it can be irregular so having everything packed and ready is good planning. Or, if their period hasn’t started yet be prepared with items so that your child isn’t caught unprepared. And make sure they know how to use what’s in the kit. You might not even realize that cups come in so many designs and sizes - and they come in different firmnesses! At our store we often point people to the original Saalt Cup since it’s an average size, length, and good first time firmness. But Saalt Soft is a favorite for us to recommend if the customer has tried a cup and found it to be too firm, often signaled by the urge to p*e or a slower urine stream. And sometimes we skip a soft cup and suggest a menstrual disc since those sit higher and have less contact with the skin, decreasing any chance of bladder pressure. This order was a fun one for us all to pack! I suspect someone’s kids got special period kits and maybe mom grabbed some things for herself as well. Florence packed all but the Saalt Wear in Asheville and Katie from Saalt packed the rest in Idaho.

It’s always fun to get a BTS look and this order gave us the perfect opportunity to show how we collab with Saalt for the benefit of our customers.

Be glad I cut it at the “ahhhhhhAhhhhhhh aaaaahhhh Aaaiiiiiahhhhhh a ah a ah a ah a ah a ah a ahahAhaaaa… part which I’m sure just sounds like a dying animal with AirPods off 🥲 gotta make the monotonous tasks entertaining somehow. My playlist today was 🔥 let’s hope I didn’t make any packing mistakes while singing along.

At your cervix 🫡 What makes a small business special? This story is a great example of what it means to shop small and how businesses run by real people with faces and names can mean the difference between a fun vacation and a not so fun vacation. You can’t call up just any store and speak to a human without screaming REPRESENTATIVE amongst other choice words for 30 minutes first.

I had a call with Florence about this order and what we should do - when the communication stalled we were in a tough spot. Do we just send it and pay the hefty overnight shipping charge and assume the customer will pay the invoice? Or do we wait until it’s paid before handing the shipment to UPS? I (unfortunately) told Florence we have to wait because sadly, I’ve done the nice thing and sent before expedited extra shipping charges were paid and the customers decided not to pay it. The story still ended happily because our customer paid the rush shipping (no additional rush fee was applied, just the cost to overnight!) and Florence got the box to our UPS person just in time. Ada did a beautiful job communicating with the customer and it all worked out in the end!

This is just one story of many where a small team pulls off a miracle to help a customer in need. What we lack in free shipping we make up for in heart! If you shop small you’re making our dreams come true and keeping us in business to hopefully be there again and again when the bat signal is lit for another customer.

And thanks to the customer we helped in this video, who was flexible with us when our stock level was off by -1!

The joys of being in your 40s… I got an early period just in time for my weekend. It could have been worse, it could have started while I was in Chicago - I definitely didn’t pack my disc that trip bc my period was not due for some time. Despite the early start I enjoyed a fun concert with my 17 year old son. It was almost impossible to get the tickets for Tame Impala but lucky for my son I’m a seasoned concert go-er and won the Ticketmaster war. And, I taught him how to skip the line for the train when leaving a crowded venue. These are life lessons he needs to know before he becomes an adult in a few short months (insane, I know!)

My Hello Disc didn’t let me down this weekend. I’m certainly glad I wasn’t dealing with my period at Lollapalooza, the idea of going crossed my mind but ultimately I skipped it. Instead, I flew in just to queue for the Smashing Pumpkins GA “aftershow” and flew right back home. Had I stayed I would have really put my disc and my back to the test 😅 I think I’m too old for festivals ngl.

I hope this early period isn’t a trend. If it is I guess I’ll have another vlog in August for you. But hopefully not.
