🥋 Student Spotlight: Josh Wexler

At Asheville Sun Soo, martial arts is often a family affair—and few families embody that spirit better than the Wexlers.

Josh Wexler, an IT Project Manager, trains alongside his three children: Ellie, Sawyer, and Jackson. Together, they’ve made Sun Soo a part of their family’s journey, building confidence, discipline, and resilience both on and off the mat.

Josh just tested for and was promoted to 3rd Degree Black Belt. In addition to his own training, he serves as an instructor to both children’s and adult classes, helping guide the next generation of martial artists while continuing to challenge himself as a student.

We’re proud of Josh’s dedication, leadership, and commitment to the Sun Soo community. His journey is a reminder that black belt excellence isn’t just about skill—it’s about consistency, service, and lifelong growth.

Congratulations, Josh! We look forward to seeing what’s next on your path!

In traditional martial arts, leadership is often associated with ego, shouting, and "power tripping." We choose a different path.

True authority doesn't require overreaching or yelling; it’s about how we function every day. We focus on the practice itself rather than the person in charge. It is unusual in this industry, but it is how we teach leadership on and off the mat.

What a fun day at HoneyFest! 🐝

As a proud sponsor, Asheville Sun Soo was honored to help support an event dedicated to honey bee research, conservation, and community. From providing shuttle transportation to entertaining the crowd with martial arts demonstrations, we loved being part of a day that brought so many families together.

And yes… a few brave volunteers even joined us on stage to learn the B***y Bump. 😄

Thanks to everyone who stopped by, cheered on the demonstrations, and helped make the event such a success!

School teacher by day, martial artist by night! 🥋👨‍🏫

Meet Daniel Clare, one of our dedicated students here at Asheville Sun Soo. Daniel has been training with us for two years and has recently earned his red belt through consistent hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to growth.

Martial arts is truly a family affair for the Clares. Daniel’s son, Jackson, is currently a blue-red belt, and his daughter, Erin, is also training alongside him. It’s inspiring to see the whole family supporting each other on their martial arts journeys.

As a teacher, Daniel understands the value of patience, discipline, and lifelong learning—qualities that have helped him succeed both in the classroom and on the mat. We’re proud to have him as part of our Asheville Sun Soo family and look forward to seeing what he accomplishes next.

Congratulations, Daniel, on your progress and dedication! 👏🥋

🥋 JUNE TESTING IS THIS SATURDAY! 🥋

The moment our students have been working toward is almost here.

On Saturday, June 6 at 2:00 PM, Asheville Sun Soo students will step onto the floor to demonstrate the focus, discipline, and perseverance they’ve developed through their training. Belt testing is about more than earning a new rank—it’s an opportunity to challenge yourself, build confidence, and take the next step in your martial arts journey.

We are honored to welcome two exceptional martial artists who will help make this a memorable event:

⭐ Grandmaster Mark Nathanson, 9th Degree Black Belt and Interim President of the Taekwon Do Collaborative. Grandmaster Nathanson began training under Grandmaster Suk Jun Kim in 1974 and is the only student to progress from white belt to 9th Degree Black Belt under his direct instruction. His decades of leadership, teaching, and competition have earned him tremendous respect throughout the martial arts community.

⭐ Master Alex Brumley, 4th Degree Black Belt and owner of Taekwondo University Beginning his martial arts journey at just three years old, Master Brumley has earned black belts in Taekwondo, Aiki-Jujitsu, and Kyokushin. He is dedicated to preserving the traditions of martial arts while helping students develop confidence, discipline, and character that lasts a lifetime.

A special thank you to our event sponsor, 2020 Builders WNC, for supporting our students and helping strengthen our local community. Their commitment to building strong foundations extends far beyond construction.

Families, friends, and supporters are invited to join us as we celebrate the hard work and accomplishments of our students. We can’t wait to see them shine.

Sometimes all you need is a little encouragement… and a loud KIYAP!

In this video, Grandmaster Tony Morris helps 9-year-old Jack Lewis prepare for his very first board break. Jack began his martial arts journey in 2025. Today, he’s a Blue-Red Belt taking on a challenge that once seemed impossible.

One of the most powerful things about martial arts isn’t learning how to break boards—it’s learning how to break through fear, self-doubt, and the voice in your head that says, “I can’t.”

With the right mindset, and a little encouragement, amazing things happen.

Way to go, Jack! We can’t wait to see that board break! 👊🥋
