Could your classroom be making it harder for students to learn?
As educators prepare for a new school year, it's easy to focus on creating a classroom that's visually engaging. But research suggests that too much visual stimulation can actually compete for students' attention and working memory.
Intentional classroom design isn't about having lessâit's about making every element support learning.
Before students arrive, ask yourself:
Does everything in my classroom help students learn, or does it compete for their attention?

Every empty desk tells a story.
As many teachers reflect on the past school year, one challenge continues to weigh heavily on our hearts:
Students who just weren't there.
Behind every empty desk is a student with a storyâone that may involve transportation, family circumstances, health, or challenges beyond our control.
As educators, we can't solve every obstacle our students face.
But we can influence what happens when they walk through our classroom door.
Do they feel welcomed?
Do they know someone is genuinely glad they're there?
Do they feel safe enough to ask questions, make mistakes, and take risks?
Do they know they belong?
While there is no single solution to improving attendance, creating a classroom where every student feels seen, valued, and connected can make a lasting difference. Sometimes, the most powerful thing we can offer our students is a place where they know they matter.
Because belonging doesn't happen by chance.
It happens by design.
