Celeste Mayes, homeschooling mom and Ch B director shares her “why”.

Deut 6: These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. 3 Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you.

4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 (decree 1) Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 (decree 2) Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 (decree 3) Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. (more decrees follow in the chapter).

I teach my kids, so I/we can be an example of decree 2 in verse 7. We read God’s Word together, we pray together, we see God in what we study and learn together, we walk the dogs together and laugh and really know one another. This doesn’t ensure they won’t stray, but I can be at peace knowing that our time with them is well spent & provides the kind of foundation that God calls us as parents to instill in our home.

Sawyer Wiersma, age 18, from Jenison, Michigan, spent the summer working at the Boardwalk Chapel where he led small groups of teenagers and adults from visiting church youth groups in street evangelism. The Boardwalk Chapel in Wildwood, New Jersey houses 30-40 young people during the summer where they receive classroom training in apologetics and do evangelism outreach to tourists and others in the community.

His position involved daily evangelism training, Bible study, and sharing the gospel with tourists and those in the community.

Part of his work involved leading small groups of teenagers and adults from visiting church youth groups in street evangelism.

Sawyer has a great passion for evangelism and for sharing the gospel. He will be in Challenge IV next year and plans to go to college and then to seminary so he can serve the church as a pastor. "CC gave me the tools to be able to present the gospel clearly and persuasively, said Sawyer."

Apply the wisdom of ancient classical education to your home school. The Greek word paideia means "education" or "upbringing." We must be reminded that teaching children means more than just perfecting their reading, writing, and arithmetic skills.
