Fifth grade reading AIG students concluded our novel study of “The Westing Game” by creating text specific board games. Students created the game with trivia that comes from the text and had to complete everything from scratch as well as write directions for others to be able to play their game. Writing directions proved to be the most challenging part of the activity. After games were completed, students had to rely on their classmates directions to play each game. Students gave feedback to each other group as a way to learn how to grow from this activity.

Fourth Grade students read the text, The Water Princess based on the story of Georgie Badiel. The story talks about Gie Gie and her mother’s daily walk to get clean water. After reading the picture book, we read and learned some more about the water situation throughout the world. Students then predicted what items could be good to help filter the dirty water. After predictions were made, students worked in groups to test these items. The reactions were fantastic! After testing the items, students could choose 3 items and create a better water filter. They had some very creative ideas and some of them worked really well.
