We’re not saying this is what happens when you annoy a Red-tailed Hawk, but we’re also NOT saying it isn’t. 👀😂

Okay, okay, the second bird is not the mockingbird from the first clip 😅 But when the Fairy Owlet Mother says “hey i have a funny idea you can do with the mockingbird v. red-tailed hawk footage”, you make that edit happen 😆👩‍💻

Mockingbirds are known for mobbing larger birds like hawks, repeatedly swooping, diving, and chasing them in an attempt to drive a potential predator away. And while Red-tailed Hawks do prey on birds, they’re not out here plotting revenge against the neighborhood mockingbird 🤣

The size difference between these two is truly comical! 😆

Cocoa, the oldest and largest owlet, hatched on March 15. Honor, the youngest and smallest, hatched on March 30. That’s a 15-day age gap, and when you’re a rapidly growing owlet, those two weeks make a HUGE visual difference. 🦉

Barn owls are asynchronous layers and hatchers. Typically, eggs are laid about 2 to 3 days apart and hatch in roughly the same order, creating a natural size hierarchy among the siblings.

And fun fact, Maple and Dash’s clutch gave us something we had never seen in 10 years of streaming. Cocoa and the next oldest owlet, Matilda, were laid SIX days apart. 🤯

That unusual gap early in the clutch helped spread the ages out even further. By the time little Honor arrived, Cocoa already had a 15-day head start on growing, developing feathers, and generally looking like Gigantor compared to her siblings 😂 So when you see a lineup of barn owl siblings and wonder, “HOW are these all from the same clutch?!” This is why 🤓

Putting the “wild” in wildlife 😂🦉

Pebbles was just minding her business on the perch when Bamm-Bamm came in HOT with what we can only describe as a crash mating attempt 😆💥

Barn owl mating can be quick and sometimes a little less graceful than you might expect. Courtship and mating are part of maintaining a pair bond and, when conditions are right, preparing for a potential clutch.

Do barn owls mate for life? 🦉❤️ Sometimes!

Barn owls often form long-term pair bonds, with some couples staying together for years and raising multiple broods together. They strengthen those bonds through behaviors like preening, vocalizing, sharing food, and spending time together. But a barn owl can also form a new pair bond if they lose or become separated from their mate.

So while “mate for life” isn’t a guarantee, barn owl relationships can be pretty long-lasting. 🥹
