September Social Emotional Learning in the AES Library
At Ashdown Elementary School, our library is more than a place to find great books. It is also a place where students learn important skills that help them
grow as learners, classmates, and friends.
Throughout the school year, Kβ5 students will participate in a monthly Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lesson in the library. Our September lesson featured
Iβm Sorry You Got Mad by Kyle Lukoff and focused on the importance of giving a sincere and meaningful apology.
Students learned that a proper apology has three important parts:
Say what you did. Take responsibility and explain what happened.
Say that you are sorry. Give a sincere apology for your actions.
Say how you will fix it. Explain what you can do to make things better or prevent it from happening again.
During the lesson, students acted out common school scenarios and practiced thinking about how each situation could be handled with a proper apology.
Students then used what they learned to create and practice their own meaningful apologies in a skit.
Family Extension Activity:
Parents can continue the conversation at home by talking with their child about a time when an apology helped make a situation better. Ask your child to
practice the three steps: What did you do? Are you sorry? How will you fix it? Families can also role-play a simple everyday scenario and let their child
practice giving a sincere apology.
We look forward to continuing our monthly SEL Library Series throughout the school year and helping our Kβ5 students build skills that will support them
both inside and outside the classroom.
