Tips for the holiday season βπ²π¨οΈ
December can be one of the busiest months for vocalists! There are auditions, tech weeks, holiday concerts, hours of socializing, parties, etc. all while being surrounded by illness and dry air π£
Although this month is busy, it is still very important that we take into account our vocal load and take the necessary steps to ensure we can keep a sustainable voice throughout this holiday season!
π§Hydration, hydration, hydration! Extremely important during this time of year due to the lack of humidity in the air AND if you are drinking alcohol during those holiday parties. Using your voice may not feel 100% after a night of drinking if you forgot to hydrate throughout the night.
π£οΈAlthough it's the season of socializing and parties, it's OKAY to take breaks from speaking when at a social event. Try to avoid talking over loud music or groups of people who are all talking at once.
ποΈTis the season of performances! Whether you're auditioning, in a show, singing in a holiday concert, or doing services with your church choir, warming up and cooling down your voice is crucial! Don't neglect stretches/massages (neck muscles, larynx, tongue, jaw, shoulders, chest) before and after your performances. Get that blood flow moving!
π€If your voice is feeling under the weather, give yourself permission to rest! If you have a performance while sick or recovering from illness, modify the notes that feel difficult to access at that point in time. Do not push through it as there could be long-term issues that may arise. If you can't sing at all, don't sing! There will be more opportunities in the future, give yourself the rest you need.
Happy singing friends ππ
