What happens to a working dog’s muscles after high-impact work?

A lot more than what you can see from the outside.

Explosive acceleration, jumping, landing, deceleration and rapid changes in direction place substantial mechanical demands on muscle. High-force lengthening contractions can be particularly demanding on muscle tissue.

After strenuous work, the body enters a recovery process that includes restoring energy resources, repairing cellular structures and adapting to the workload.

And importantly, some effects of demanding exercise may not be obvious immediately.

That’s why recovery shouldn’t begin when a dog finally looks tired. Recovery is part of the work.

TRAIN… RECOVER… ADAPT… RETURN READY

Save this for your next training day and share it with a handler that needs to see it.

Train~Recovery~Return Ready

A working dog looking ready to work doesn’t necessarily mean the body has completely recovered.

Working dogs are capable of pushing through physical demands. That’s a valued quality. However, recovery is a physiological process, not simply a matter of whether a dog appears tired.

After demanding work, the body has to restore energy, repair and adapt to physical stress, and return systems towards baseline.

The absence of obvious fatigue isn’t necessarily proof of complete recovery. That is why recovery deserves a place in the working dog training conversation.

What do you notice first when your dog is not recovering as well as usual?

09/01/2026

The work may be over. The recovery isn’t.

A working dog can finish a demanding training session looking completely normal while the body continues working through the physical stress created by that workload.
Police K9, detection dogs, protection dogs, and sport dogs are routinely asked to perform at a level far beyond the average pet.
Recovery should be part of the training conversation, not an afterthought. This page is going to focus on working dog recovery education.

There are 2 forms of recovery. Hydration and the work itself (Maintenance and Recovery).

Hydration Recovery (give in water immediately after)
Replace what the dog loses during work.

Hydration recovery is designed to support the body’s fluid and electrolyte balance following strenuous activity(especially during heat), prolonged exercise, or intense training. Supports:
•Fluid replacement
•Electrolyte balance
•Heat recovery
•Recovery after prolonged or intense work
Think: REFUEL & REHYDRATE

MAINTENANCE & RECOVERY (given with food 2x/day)
Support what the work stresses

Maintenance and Recovery is designed to support the body’s recovery from the physical and neurological demands of high performance work. Supports:
•Muscle recovery
•Soft tissue recovery
•Ligament & tendon support
• Normal nervous system function
• Healthy inflammatory response
• Protection against oxidative stress associated with strenuous activity.
Think: REPAIR & RECOVER

TOGETHER: Hydration replaces what the dog loses. Maintenance and Recovery supports recovery from what the work demands. Hydrate the body. Support the recovery systems. Get your dog ready for the next day of work.

The dog that started it all.
Every product has a story—this one started with my own dog, Killian.

When he began dealing with serious back issues, I, in collaboration with a veterinarian, set out to build something better—not a generic joint supplement, but a formula focused on real recovery support. Something that could help maintain comfort, mobility, and overall function without cutting corners on quality.

What started as a personal solution quickly proved to be something more. After refining the formula and adding key ingredients, it became clear this wasn’t just for one dog—it was built for dogs under real physical demand.

Today, Maintenance & Recovery is trusted by handlers and veterinarians who expect more—because it was never created to follow the market…
it was created out of necessity. The logo for Breed Genetics was created in his honor. ❤️

Nerve fatigue in working dogs…

I want to talk about something that doesn’t get discussed a lot with working dogs… and that’s nerve fatigue.
When we think about recovery, most people think about muscles or joints.
But working dogs don’t just work physically.
They work neurologically.

Think about what these dogs are doing. They’re operating in extremely high drive. Their nervous system is firing constantly.

They’re scanning environments, responding to commands, engaging suspects, searching buildings, tracking… all while maintaining intense focus and control.

That level of drive and concentration is powered by the nervous system.
And just like muscles, the nervous system can get fatigued.

When a dog is constantly running in high gear without enough recovery, you can start to see subtle signs of nerve fatigue
Things like:
• Slower engagement

• Less explosive response

• Difficulty settling after work

• Reduced clarity during training

• Or just looking mentally “flat”

Sometimes handlers assume the dog is being stubborn or losing drive.
But a lot of the time, the nervous system is simply overloaded.
That’s one of the reasons I built Maintenance & Recovery the way I did.

It wasn’t just about joints or soreness.

It was about supporting the entire recovery process — including the nervous system and the cellular stress that comes with high-drive work. Because when the nervous system recovers properly, the dog stays sharp.
They stay explosive.

They stay clear-headed.

And they’re ready to perform when it matters. Working dogs give us everything they’ve got.

Supporting their recovery — physically and neurologically — is one of the best ways we can give back to them.

Joint supplements focus on structure (cartilage, synovial fluid, joint integrity). They build the frame.

Maintenance and Recovery™ focuses on function and recovery. They keep the athlete moving.

BOTH are needed.

Maintenance and Recovery™ helps bridge the gap between peak performance and preventable breakdown.
