#SundayScience The advancement in personalized student learning. A growing appreciation of individual preferences and aptitudes has led toward more “personalized learning,” in which instruction is tailored to a student’s individual needs.

Given the diversity of individual preferences, and the complexity of each human brain, developing teaching methods that optimize learning will require engineering solutions of the future.

Our #Fridayfocus Wondering what sustainable, high-producing agriculture might look like? This science project explores how analyzing bird's-eye-view pictures of a field can make farmers aware of variations in their fields.

Farmers can use this information to optimize their farming practices, or even feed this information to high-tech agricultural equipment so the machines can automatically adjust their actions (like fertilizing or watering) to the needs of a piece of land. Establish a procedure so a computer can infer the fraction of ground covered by grass using the color histograms of a bird's-eye picture of the area. Go STEM!

#tbt The Needle. Almost every culture on the planet has designed some sort of clothing. It didn’t take long for our ancient ancestors to figure out clothing is needed to protect our sad, hairless hides from the elements. The needle allowed us to create clothing that conformed to each individual, for every type of weather. The needle hasn’t changed much over the last 20,000 years or so. The first needles appear around 28,000 BC. Early needles are crafted from bone. Then copper, bronze, iron…well you get it. But the basic design has stayed the same. Go STEM!

#SundayScience Provide energy from fusion. Human-engineered fusion has been demonstrated on a small scale. The challenge is to scale up the process to commercial proportions, in an efficient, economical, and environmentally benign way.

Our #FridayFocus Green Technology: Build an Electronic Soil Moisture Sensor to Conserve Water. Water is a valuable resource, and water shortages are a serious problem in many parts of the world.

The problem can be made worse by people who waste water; for example, by watering a garden or using sprinklers on their lawn (or a farmer taking care of an entire field) when it has rained recently or the soil is already moist.

How can you help conserve water and prevent such waste? One way is to build an electronic soil moisture sensor. This project will show you how to build a circuit that indicates whether soil is wet or dry, but the circuit itself is unprotected. It will be up to you to engineer a solution, like a waterproof carrying case that turns the basic circuit into a useful, portable soil moisture sensor. Go STEM!

#tbt Invention of Nylon: These activities investigate polymers. Nylon was first used commercially in a nylon-bristled toothbrush in 1938, followed more famously in women's stockings or "nylons" which were shown at the 1939 New York World's Fair and first sold commercially in 1940. Go STEM!

#SundayScience. Making (in) History: Learning by Reinvention teachers can help students recognize that everything has history, and creatively engage them in reinventing that history.

Through this small making project, students will explore the history of innovation and communication. At the same time, learning about making electrical connections, how to use tools, and how to troubleshoot their work when it failed. Go STEM!

#tbt Thomas Alva Edison’s cylinder phonograph brought music to the masses. It was the first type of record player, which used tinfoil sheets and a vibrating stylus. The 1857 invention was a far cry from the iPod, but it heralded the beginning of portable music. Just think—before the phonograph, if people wanted to listen to a song, they had to find someone to play it. Go STEM!

#TuesdayTip Inspire collaboration. Create an atmosphere of teamwork. Actively teach and role model teamwork skills. Promote an inclusive, respectful, relaxed environment that supports new ideas and questions. The control of the learning process should be transferred to the young people. Create new roles and rules for your groups that stress responsibility.

#SundayScience. A trip to Mars. Earth's natural resources are dwindling, and scientists are seeking alternative solutions for the future. Among them is traveling to our nearest planetary neighbor — Mars.

Educators can represent various spacecraft that have been proposed to perform interplanetary missions and engage students to talk among themselves about which of these seems most viable. Then introduce a variety of materials to use to construct a rocket for the mission.

It must safely transport an astronaut (in this case an egg) to their destination, retrieve a pod, and using the criteria of the Mars mission, the craft must land upright, lift off, and then land upright back on Earth with the pod. It’s up to the students to iterate and arrive at a viable solution for the mission. Go STEM!

#tuesdaytip Make connections. Learning does not take place in compartments. When you learn a new idea, you do so in the context of what you already know.

For example, if exploring the concept of friction, connections can be made to slipping on ice. Drawing existing knowledge or experiences provides a framework of understanding and improves retention. It also provides the groundwork for then applying concepts to new problems and challenges.

“All the world is a laboratory to the inquiring mind.” - Martin Henry Fischer, Physician & Author www. mindframeeducation.com

#SundayScience Repurposing Plastic. Challenge students to use bags, sheets, tubing, and other materials in conjunction with household irons and other tools to create something purposeful and or beautiful from this waste. Solutions range from boots, umbrellas, even prosthetic limbs made from discarded materials.  Participants learn by rapid prototyping and experimentation that while the plastic easily melts, it can be layered to add to its strength. Sometimes it looks like a design mistake leads them two steps back, when it's actually one step forward. Go STEM!

#tbt The thermometer underwent centuries of trial and error by many different inventors before reaching the product we use today — and it’s a product we need.

The thermometer is a staple in determining just how sick a person is at any given time. Exceeding the acceptable limit will immediately warrant a visit to the hospital. World’s first modern thermometer was reportedly invented by Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit in 1714. Go STEM!

#tuesdaytip Provide hands-on opportunities. To make science education truly valuable, students need the chance to apply what they’ve learned beyond the textbook. Learn by doing!

“You can teach a student a lesson for a day, but if you teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives.” - Clay P. Bedford, President of Kaiser Aerospace & Electronics and More
