The Briar Woods High School PTSO provides support and service to the Teachers, Students, Parents and local community. So what exactly do we fundraise for?
In the past few years, we have purchased things like:
-Robotics equipment for competition
-Film Cameras for the Art dept.
-Picnic tables and benches for the courtyard
-Tables for alternative classroom arrangements
-Fees for DECA and FBLA National competition
-Assistance with the All Night Grad Party, Homecoming, and the Winter Dance
-Go Pro helicopters for the Tech Ed Department
-$10,000 in multiple scholarships every year for seniors who apply and are selected
Books for the English Dept.
The Briar Woods High School PTSO promotes a spirit of caring, citizenship and respect to encourage family and community involvement in our student's education, social/extracurricular activities, safety, ethics, and character-building. The BWHS PTSO strives to put the extras in education!
The next best thing to an in-person senior awards ceremony is a beautiful slide show put together by Rae Comparin in guidance.
Congratulations to all the Class of 2020 scholarship and awards recipients!

Every year the PTSO offers scholarships to students who have contributed in the classroom, in the school and in the community. And every year, we get many qualified applicants making the choices so very difficult. This year was no different, so my hats off to those students who took the time to submit an application. We appreciate you, we see you, and we wish you all the best.
Having said that, I am so very excited to announce the Class of 2020 PTSO Scholarship Recipients:
Caden Greene - $2,000
Bronte Caulfield - $1,000
Ian Rupp - $1,000
In a "normal" school year, these would have been announced during a school awards ceremony; however, I have notified each of them by email, and their achievement will be included in the Senior Scholarship, Awards and Recognition slide scheduled to post on June 4th.
We are so proud of and excited for these wonderful students for their contributions to Briar Woods over the last four years!
Congratulations to Briar Woods Senior Lasasta whose graduation speech has been featured on U.S. Sen Tim Kaine's Facebook and website as part of Kaine's "Everybody's the Graduation Speaker" video contest.
Please take a moment to watch. So good!

I never thought in a million years, I would ask this question or do a fundraiser involving this but.... if we sold these masks as a fundraiser, would you all be interested? There is a choice of a one-ply and a three-ply. The PTSO bought the one-ply for teachers, and they are very comfy. But some people may want thicker ones. Price would be between $8-$12.
If you read this and are interested, hit the "like" button or comment. I would have to have a 50 piece minimum for each type so I'm trying to gauge interest.
A bittersweet day today as our teachers went back to classrooms frozen in time since March 11. On a happy note however, the PTSO was able to provide customized gourmet boxed lunches from Apple Spice Catering as well as deliver the BW face masks. While non-LCPS employees like me weren't allowed inside the school to serve, I had my spies on the inside send me pics :)
Thanks again to our hardworking teachers and staff!

We will be holding a PTSO meeting via Zoom on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at 7pm. Since this page isn't a closed group, please send me an email at [email protected] for a link to the meeting as I don't want to publish it here in public place. Mrs. Alzate will be on the call so if you have any questions, now's your chance.
The Advertising Director at Loudoun Now reached out to me today to let me know that Class of 2020 parents can purchase online or print spotlights for your 2020 graduate! And to my surprise, they are generously giving back to the PTSO. It's a win win!

Happy Staff Appreciation Day #5.
What better way to show how much we love and appreciate our teachers and staff than with a video compilation of all the wonderful pics and videos I've received over the last two weeks set to a song titled "You Have Made a Difference" written specifically for educators. I've had it sent to staff this morning, but I've linked it below for all to enjoy.
And, as an added surprise, the PTSO has purchased the staff the swaggiest of Pandemic swag there is. Briar Woods Face Masks! Hey if ya have to wear them, at least have fun with it, right?!
If you have a moment today and haven't already done so, take some time to send a quick email to your kids teachers thanking them. Your encouragement is probably better than a lunch or a face mask 😉
Thanks so much to all of you who contributed to this video helping me to salvage Staff Appreciation Week-Pandemic Style.
Happy Staff Appreciation Day #4!
This is what happens when a student picks up an old hobby to show how much our staff is appreciated. Y'all, this took a reallllly long time for Oliver Baumann to put together which makes it even more meaningful :)
Staff Appreciation Day #3!
I know this isn't the same as the PTSO bringing in massage therapists or smoothies or lunch this week at school, but the feedback I have gotten from teachers letting me know how much they appreciate the acknowledgement from students makes me feel a little better that we can't spoil them in person right now. Rest assured, we will make it up to them at some point.
Today's clever submission has had me singing "The World's Gonna Know Your Name" for the last week. Junior Arya Arun calls out his Hall of Fame teachers in a catchy, clever Tik Tok that I've had sent to staff this morning.
Staff Appreciation Day 2!
To our Briar Woods Staff...this is how much you are loved!
This tiled picture has so much thoughtfulness and creativity behind it. These girls, led by Allison Ko, reached out to me to see if they could do this together and have me send it to staff. Self initiated, creative, heartfelt. It truly made me well up in tears. Well done ladies. Well done!

HAPPY STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK!
Here is part of an email I had sent to staff today via Connect Ed...
On behalf of all the families at BW, we want to say Thank You. THANK. YOU. We appreciate EVERYTHING you do for our kids, our community, our school. This has been an extraordinary few months for everyone, and what has been asked of you all is something that I don't think most of us at home truly understand. But I can tell you, you all are knocking it out of the park. We hear you. We see you. And we APPRECIATE all that you have done to make sure that learning continues and needs are met in our school community on all levels from the most basic to the most difficult while having to take care of yourselves and your families while working from home.
To kick off the week, I want to share a terrific tik tok from Mackenzie Cunnane. This gave me the goosebumps when she sent it to me because she modified the words to Alanis Morissette's "Thank You" personalizing it for Briar Woods and sings it herself. I think it may be better than a breakfast burrito from Anita's that we had planned to serve :)
PS. To parents: I'm still taking pics and videos throughout the week. They are being sent to staff daily culminating in a special treat on Friday. Send still pics and/or videos to [email protected]
I was trying to avoid reaching out on FB to avoid ruining a surprise, but the two mass emails I sent out last week weren't very effective...
This week is Staff Appreciation week, but because of the shut down, we aren't able to provide the great week of events that we usually provide. So I am reaching out today asking if you all would have your kids either create a video, a tik-tok or take a still picture with a sign showing the teachers and staff at BW how much they appreciate them. They can do a dance, sing, play an instrument, show a new hobby, make a sign...anything really. Just a simple thank you in a picture goes a long way, and It goes without saying that nothing inappropriate will be shared ;)
Once done, please send the link to the video or a jpeg picture to [email protected]. I'd like as many as I can get today, May 3 but will take them up through Tuesday. I've gotten about a dozen so far, but I'd love to have more.

Remind your students to complete their Senior Recognition slide in Google Classroom. We would like to celebrate the Class of 2020 with a slide show presentation that can be shared on our website and social media. Whether they are enlisting in the military, going to 2 yr. or 4 yr. college, working, taking a gap year, etc., we want to celebrate them! Thanks!
Please share and remind other BWHS Class of 2020 families!

Drop what you are doing and watch it.
Hey now, you're an ALL STAR....
[04/21/20] I need to crowd source something. Let's say you were the PTSO president, and you had originally planned another great Staff Appreciation Week for May but then the world was hit with a Pandemic shutting down EVERRRRYTHING (as if that would ever happen right?..I mean, pfft, you only see that in sci fy movies not real life...) and you want to celebrate the staff but you aren't quite sure how to do that from home, what ideas or advice would you give said PTSO President about ways to show appreciation for our staff? Asking for a friend who hates sci fy.
Here's a great way for upperclassman to stay engaged and earn college credit.

For those of us with kids in the Class of 2021, this is really good news. Virginia Tech has made the SAT/ACT test optional for the students applying as part of the Class of 2025. JMU was already test optional. I'm sure more schools will follow suit.
