Dominion Electric Power Surge
As of July 2, 2023
Just a brief note to bring everyone up to date on the HVAC issues prior to today’s service.
The problem began with the failure of the Dominion Electric’s transformer behind the church. This transformer is connected to a legacy overhead line that comes across Route Seven and is not connected to the power line buried along Russell Branch Parkway. When the transformer failed, it created a power surge that hit the air handler that serves the sanctuary and burned up the motor and the controller.
This is either the second or third time that this transformer has failed damaging the HVAC. Allan Steed and Chris Smith took the immediate steps to report the failure to Dominion Electric and then to make sure the remaining HVAC systems were still operating normally. Dominion Electric has told us that they have replaced the transformer.
Richard Haddad reported the problems to Commercial Express (our HVAC contractor) and they have prepared a proposal to replace the motor and controller which we have accepted. The timing of that repair is uncertain at this time. We will be posting periodic updates on www.sdlife.org,
Richard has also filed a claim with our insurance company and an adjuster has been assigned. Because the surge was not the fault of the church, we should be able to recover the cost of repairs.
A few closing thoughts.
Our HVAC system did not fail on its own. It was damaged by the power surge that came from Dominion Electric. That difference is important to the insurance claim.
If we had replaced the HVAC system, similar damage would have been inflicted on the new system.
We need to explore dropping the legacy power line and connecting to the Russell Branch source. The Property Committee is undertaking that step. This analysis will take some time, require cooperation from Dominion Electric, and the cost is unknown. Once the options are understood they will be reported to the Vestry for a decision.
Finally a special thanks to Allan, Chris and Richard for their prompt action.
Any questions or concerns please let us know.

Bishop Curry Update: As previously reported, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry has been resting and working a reduced schedule following a hospitalization Memorial Day weekend. The Episcopal Church Office of Public Affairs reported yesterday that, while he will continue to work from home in July on a reduced schedule, his doctors have approved some travel. He plans to be present to preach at the Episcopal Youth Event and It’s All About Love Festival, both taking place in Maryland in early July. He will continue to rest and engage in medical care during his usual August vacation.
Bishop Curry offered the following statement: “I want you to know I am mindful of the power of prayer in tandem with good medical care, and I am blessed to be receiving both. I love what I do and cannot wait to be back actively serving our Lord and the church. I also know that the God who gave us a soul also gave us a body and a mind, and as we are to care for our souls, so we are to care for our bodies. I am in a season where I am called to be mindful about the care of my body. In that spirit, though, I am looking forward to attending Episcopal Youth Event and It’s All About Love, even at a more limited level, as a kind of Christmas in July since much of this is like Advent—a time of waiting on test results and considering various treatments. Thank you so much for all your prayers, and please know I am also praying for you.”
