Vibha is a movement that empowers you to make a difference. We aim to ensure that every underprivileged child attains his or her right to education, health and opportunity.

Vibha is a social venture catalyst that seeds, grows and scales solutions to the systemic ills that affect the lives of underprivileged children in India.

In 2017, CNN HLN anchor Henna Bakshi decided to volunteer and fundraise for Vibha. But before doing so, she wanted to connect with the children whom she was going to help. Henna video chatted with the kids at Jan Madhyam, a Vibha supported solution in New Delhi which aims to transform the lives of differently abled children. In 2018, exactly one year later, Henna wanted to find out how the lives of the children had transformed. Here is what she discovered.

We are excited to announce that Vibha has signed a tripartite agreement with the Government of Andhra and our long term partner Sikshana Foundation to pilot “Prerna”, Sikshana’s phenomenal motivational program in 11 tribal Mandals(Administrative Precinct) of the Vizag district.

The program is expected to enhance the learning levels in 1,958 public schools benefitting over 73,000 children! This is the second state in India where Vibha has played an instrumental role in scaling up “Prerna”. The program has already been implemented by Sikshana in the entire state of Karnataka impacting over 2 Million children!

Vibha's success with Sikshana’s motivational program, 'Prerana' reached new heights by expanding geographies.
Further to its success in Karnataka, this MOU with Andhra Pradesh government will benefit 1,958 public schools in 11 tribal mandals of Vizag district benefiting 73,720 children.

Samavesh

One of the key principles that Vibha abides by while developing solutions is to "not to create parallel systems". Rather we strive to optimize existing systems by addressing gaps where applicable. The CUBEQ program (Creating an Urban Base for Education Quality) run by Samavesh Society for Development and Governance in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, is one such example which aims to improve the quality of education in Government schools. Here is Anwar Jafriji, founder leader of Samavesh talking about how the Vibha partnership is helping transform public school education in Madhya Pradesh.

Wishing all our friends a very happy 4th of July!

Society for Education and Action (SEA)

Society for Education and Action (SEA) is a partnership that came out of Vibha's emergency relief efforts during the 2004 tsunami. SEA works among the fishing community in coastal Tamil Nadu and strives for "a healthy, secure life and total development for every child and woman through entire community participation. especially by promoting Women’s Participation”.

SEA has made remarkable impact in the villages it operates in by eradicating child marriage, child labour and corporal punishment in schools. Here is Mr. Desingu, a 11th generation fisherman, who also heads SEA as it founder and CEO talking about the impact they are delivering with the help of Vibha.

“I grew up in a slum in Mulund. Studying there was very difficult, because girls weren’t expected to do anything major with their lives…becoming a home maker was the only way. I repeatedly asked my father to enrol me in classes that would help me clear my 10th standard board exams, but we couldn't afford it. Despite trying to understand these concepts myself, I couldn't keep up with Science or Math and I failed. My parents wanted to support me and my education but I knew that we couldn't afford it. It was difficult to accept this challenge but I more determined than ever to reappear for my exams.
We couldn’t afford the fees for a reattempt and father didn't want me to let me go out of the house to work so I found a middle way— I started making necklaces and friendship bands from home to save money for my education. I would wake up really early, finish my house work, work hard to sell these bands and then study until the early hours of the morning…that was my routine for years.
I earned only 9 rupees a day for my labour - I saved up all that money and after 4 years, I could finally reappear and pass my 10th boards. I was delighted but it also pinched me to know that there were other girls, just like me who would probably give up after the first attempt. I wanted to educate myself more, so that I could make a real difference and I enrolled myself into an undergrad programme in sociology from from Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University.
During this time, I kept going to the girls from my slum, trying to analyse why and how they would fail — I realised that their basics were so weak that it was impossible for them to clear higher classes.
In 2008, after I finished my fellowship , I decided to start ‘Sakhi’ — educational classes for primary school girls. I started off with 5 young girls…I remember going to each other houses, begging their parents to let them attend. I taught them how to read, write and communicate better. From 5 girls, I grew to 75 and I had to hire a hall to conduct my classes. Mind you, all these classes are free, but I’ve been lucky to have some kind sponsors who fund this entire project! In 2010, I started a library with English books for these girls and In 2013, an international grant helped us set up our first Girls Learning Centre in the slum.
Since then, I’ve received multiple awards, I’ve been featured in a number of articles but my biggest victory is my girls — over 100 of them now have big dreams. Just the other day, they all wrote a speech for me — thanking me for being their ‘Sakhi’ and Ive never been happier — it was all in perfect English with no grammatical mistakes!”

Wishing all our women volunteers and wonderful women out there a Happy International Women's Day !!!! Do you know the theme of International Women's Day is #BeBoldForChange. Vibha supports several partner organizations in India that improve lives of underprivileged girls and woman through education, infrastructure support and more. We can't always wait for change to happen around us to make a difference in our society. Why not be the change and support a cause to make a difference in the lives of these girls and women who may not be as fortunate as we are.

Vibha - Path to a New Future

The dawn of a New Year brings hopes and promise for a better future. We hope 2017 is a great year for all our volunteers, patrons, sponsors and friends. If you are still in the process of making your New Year resolution, do consider being an active part of your community and working towards making a difference. One of the core values of Vibha is to bring together the community, and collectively make a difference in the lives of underprivileged individuals

Vibha

The end of year is right round the corner. If you are still looking to make donations, take a moment to read the message from Vibha. We greatly appreciate your help and please spread the word around.

We have a special appeal for you today - Few of our donors have come forward with the offer to match any donations made to Vibha up to a total of $16,670 by this Monday (12/26).

Why $16,670? On an average it takes just $16.67 to fund a child's education through Vibha for a full academic year. $16,670 will support 1000 children in Vibha for a year.

So if your donations add up to $16,670, we have the opportunity to support a total of 2000 children in one go. (1000 children from your donations + 1000 children from the matching donations).

As you might know, we have raised enough funds this year to support 52,132 children. Our goal is to support a total 60,000 children. So help us!

It's the time of the year when people start think about their New Year resolutions.Have you thought about volunteering your time for a good cause? Just drop us a message if you are interested in learning more about volunteering with us.

Vibha

It is always wonderful when we get to hear from our fellow volunteers about their experiences when they visit our partners NGOs in India, and get to see the impact that Vibha is creating in the lives of several individuals. One of our volunteers with #VibhaDallas had the opportunity to visit our partner NGO #Saath in Ahmedabad and share her experiences about the positive impact the Saath-Vibha partnering is creating.
Vibha is working with Saath to help underprivileged children. Saath does this by creating Child Friendly Spaces (CFS) with the aim of creating a safe and secure environment for children of the laborers in the construction communities. Saath keeps a database of the kids from the migrant worker families by giving them a migration card which acts like a score card summarizing the progress of each child. It helps families moving constantly to enroll their children in local school more smoothly.
Saath also educates the parents and kids to ensure they understand the important of education and basic amenities that they need to have. You can read more about this wonderful partnership at http://projects.vibha.org/projects/saath-child-friendly-spaces/ We are excited and thankful to our volunteers for sharing the experiences while visiting our partnering NGO's in India. If you have stories to share, please do email it to us.
