Research Guides: GW Libraries Links: Home 05/04/2023

[Updated 5/4/23 at 2pm: our library web services have been restored and should be functioning normally again. However, if you do experience problems, you can attempt the steps described below!]

A known issue at our data center is affecting library e-resources. Technical staff are working towards resolution. We strongly recommend connecting to the GW VPN first before accessing library webpages and databases, including Himmelfarb Library's nursing and medical resources.

Users of the Gelman (main library) website may use the link posted below to access many resources during the website service outage.

Research Guides: GW Libraries Links: Home Direct links to library services and resources for use when the library website if offline.

GW is migrating to a new VPN client, GlobalProtect VPN (the current client, Cisco AnyConnect, will end service on Aug. 9, 2023).

GW students and employees may download the new client to their personal and GW work devices starting now. If you use library resources from off-campus, a VPN connection is occasionally necessary to access certain (though not all) databases.

Click the link below for instructions on installing the GlobalProtect VPN. It will use the University's single sign-on, 2-factor authentication process to log in (the same as our current VPN).

New permanent VSTC Library hours take effect 4/7/23:

Library and study room access hours are daily (Mon-Sun) 6am-midnight. A GWorld Card is required to tap in.

Staffed hours remain Mon-Fri, 9:30am-6pm.

Students who use Himmelfarb Library's medical and health resources, please be aware of possible disruptions to online services late tonight (March 16th) and again tomorrow evening (March 17th).

Scheduled maintenance may cause brief disruptions connecting to Himmelfarb Library electronic resources from off campus Thursday, March 16, 11pm to 1am March 17 and Friday, March 17, 8-10pm. Thanks for your patience.

Expect Faculty & Staff holiday party noise and activity in Enterprise Hall today (12/15) between 2-4pm. Students needing to study during that time may wish to find another location to avoid disruption in the library.

The VSTC Library will be staffed for in-person assistance today (Nov. 23rd) until 2:00pm.

Enterprise Hall and library study rooms are available by GWorld card tap 24/7 through the Thanksgiving holiday and weekend. All users must have their physical GWorld Card for entrance.

Reminder: NO FOOD in the library -- dining tables are provided in Enterprise 102. There will be no trash pickup or cleaning service over the break, so please leave your study area clean if you visit. Wipes are located next to our Quiet Space/testing room.

School of Medicine/School of Nursing students: you may also donate your old textbooks to the VSTC Library, and we will forward them to the Himmelfarb Library for you.

Feel free to hand them to our staff member during business hours, or leave them in our library bookdrops (north entrance of Enterprise Hall or on the wall next to the library entrance) with a sticky note that they are donated.

Do you have old textbooks you aren't using any longer? We'd be happy to take them off your hands! Drop off your unwanted books today!

Enterprise Hall North entrance closure:
Effective immediately, the North entrance to the building (facing Geo. Washington Blvd.) is closed, and the GWorld tap has been deactivated. Students and other building users will need to park in the large lot (on the side of the building facing Rt. 7) and enter only through the main entrance, where security personnel are located.

For the convenience of our online students and others without a physical GWorld Card, the library's book drop will remain in its current location, accessible 24/7, at the North entrance in the vestibule between the two sets of doors.

GWIT will be doing network maintenance on Sunday, July 31, 2022. The VSTC campus will experience intermittent network connectivity during this change window.

Plan accordingly if using the library this weekend, and save your work frequently.

VSTC Library seating areas will be open to users who have GWorld cards enabled for campus access and need to work independently throughout the Memorial Day holiday. Our service desk staffing will resume on June 1st at 9:30am.

A theoretical nursing class assignment might require a number of research articles written by nurses. Here's how to start:

1. First, always start your research using the library's website, so you can be recognized as a GW user with access to our online journal subscriptions. For the School of Nursing, begin at

2. Under "Popular Resources" or "All Databases," we recommend using CINAHL (a specialized database for topics in nursing).

3. You will be taken to an advanced search screen. Scroll down to see many advanced limiting options. You may want to check the box to limit to Full Text (what's available as immediate PDF download), if your assignment is due soon.

4. Further down, you will see two author checkbox options -- these will let you find articles where the first (primary) author is a nurse, or where any co-author is a nurse.

5. After selecting your preferences, start searching. Be aware that "Select a Field" is a lengthy dropdown menu (search for keywords in the title, abstract, subject heading, etc.). You may need to try several combinations of terms and fields to find relevant articles.

If you plan to work in the library this Sunday (April 24), we anticipate wireless service interruptions on campus.

VSTC Wireless Service Maintenance
04/24/2022 7:00AM - 3:00PM EDT

GW IT has scheduled wireless network maintenance on the Virginia Campus on Sunday April 24th from 7:00AM until 3:00 PM.
Members of the GW community may experience intermittent access to wireless Internet during the maintenance window.
If you are connected to wireless Internet during the maintenance window, you may be disconnected.

Please check back at for further updates.

Masking in the library and study rooms will again be required for everyone starting Tuesday, April 12th, in accordance with today's University update:

"The George Washington University will reinstate its indoor mask requirement for all university-owned and -operated facilities beginning Tuesday, April 12, 2022. This requirement will extend through the remainder of the spring semester, exam period and Commencement. Masks must be worn at all times indoors unless you are actively eating or drinking or are in a private office or residence hall room."

Study groups are welcome in the library, but remember to keep your voices and audio low. Individuals prepping for exams need to share space with you. Please be courteous to them, especially evenings and weekends!

Loud groups will get a warning; if the disruption continues, staff or Security will help your group find an alternate place to meet.

New books are available today for checkout:

Handbook of Nursing Diagnosis, 16th ed.
Introductory Maternity & Pediatric Nursing, 5th ed.
Timby's Introductory Medical-Surgical Nursing, 13th ed.

Find these and other recent titles on our New Books display.
