Another Chatting Children graduate... It’s bitter sweet because I love this kid so much but he’s worked incredibly hard for this huge accomplishment! Congratulations buddy!!!

One of the many reasons I love my job... everything about these pictures brings me joy. This little love is killing it in speech therapy! 01/22/2021

Here's what poet Amanda Gorman says about her speech, auditory issues "The only thing that can impede me is myself."

This has been a useful tool in therapy so wanted to share it with all of you!

In light of the Prime Minister announcing UK school closures because I’d the COVID-19 outbreak from end of this week, If any parents in the Leicestershire area or the East Midlands UK need online or telephone support attending to their children’s therapeutic needs such as

* Anxiety about what is happening now right now
* Ideas to manage behaviours at home
* space to talk through how to manage therapeutic needs with children being at home in the difficult time.
* activity ideas to explain the situation (the resource below from mindheart is useful)

Then please get in touch. I am offering a reduced rate to make it affordable for parents and schools to use me as a service.

Email me at [email protected].

One of Kaytes House Parents shared this today. Some of it is really well explained. Show a child as much or as little as you feel is appropriate or use it in conjunction with other resources.

I think it’s important for children to understand that everyone gets poorly at some point or another no matter how much you try not to be but there are things that you can do to help yourself to stay as well as you can. 03/02/2020

Screen Dependency Disorder Is Real, and It Damages Your Child's Brain Screen dependency disorder is plaguing today's youth. Too much screen time is ruining not only their physical health but their emotional health, too.

Proud of one of our former clients who is on the Loudoun South team!! He was interviewed on ESPN and his speech was crystal clear thanks to his hard work and dedication while working with me. Chatting Children is cheering on Loudoun South!! ⚾️ 🤞🏻⚾️🤞🏻⚾️

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association

Friendly reminder...

Not that this is news to ASHA members, but it's always nice when the World Health Organization says it, too. Babies do not need screens.* According to the report, babies should not be exposed to screens at all and instead engage in interactive floor-based play. It also recommended that kids 1 to 4 years old have at least three hours of physical activity daily. (*AAC devices excluded)

In sum: ditch the screens and swap in reading, storytelling, singing and puzzles.

Heads Up Therapy

Speech-language pathologists (or SLPs) work with many children with sensory processing disorder. We also consult with occupational therapists (or OTs) regularly to give us tips on how to improve a child’s focus in speech therapy. We oftentimes start our therapy sessions jumping on a trampoline and crashing into a crash pillow or spinning on a spin disk. This calms many children and gets them “ready for speech”. This article provides great insight into early signs of sensory issues. Please contact us if you have any questions or would like further information.

Loving this article from Your Kid's Table about sensory signs a parent should be on the lookout for. Sensory integration can be a really tricky thing for parents to figure out and this can be a useful guide to help you determine if your child has sensory processing difficulties that may need further assessment from a therapist.

We had the pleasure of speaking at Winwood Children's Center in Brambleton for Community Helpers week. The children had so much fun and particularly loved making their mouth muscles strong! 11/09/2018

What Screen Time Does to Babies' and Children's Brains and Sensory Processing Abilities

ALL parents should read this article... it makes so much sense! Two expert occupational therapists explain the functional and sensory processing issues they see in children exposed to screen time - and why it happens.

Pancake Pile-Up is a great game to work on sequencing, following directions, and asking/answering questions. Most importantly, the kids have fun while working on all of these great language skills!

We are Rocking it today at We Rock the Spectrum... a great place to visit if you’re having a staycation in Loudoun County this Spring break!

We had the pleasure of meeting Anjali Gulati, the owner of We Rock the Spectrum in Loudoun County. This sensory-based gym was developed for ALL children but specifically for children with special needs. The space is large, bright, clean and cheerful! It has several different types of swings, a zip line, trampoline, rock climbing wall, quiet room, among many other items. I am excited to work with Anjali and also excited to take my child there to play. I encourage you all to check it out! 03/13/2018

One of my dear friends from my NYC days, is one of the best OTs I know and she writes a phenomenal blog with ideas for parents that not only help children's fine motor and sensory integration, but can also help their communication skills. Check this out and please share on your page to spread all of this very useful information. There are also some great gift ideas for birthday parties or holidays! toys, books, games and iPad/iPhone apps tested and approved by a pediatric occupational therapist and all the children she works with!
