January has VCU’s esteemed Professor of Oral Pathology and storyteller extraordinaire, Dr. John Svirsky bringing us up to date on Oral Pathology. In March we will head out to the new Purcellville office of Dr. Tom Grisius for training in Orthodontic appliance care. And our year wraps up in April with a lecture and hands-on presentation entitled “Mastering the Piezoelectric Ultrasonic Scaling Device” brought to us by Brasseler USA.
Mission: Since 2004 Loudoun Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has proudly sponsored the Greater Loudoun Study Club, a member of the Seattle Study Club whose mission is bringing educational excellence and advancement to dentists around the world. In 2010 we began a study club exclusively for Loudoun County Dental Hygienists; the Greater Loudoun Hygiene Study Club. This study club is dedicated to excellence in the field of dental hygiene. Our goal is to facilitate higher learning to help you be the best in your profession while creating a team environment that fosters lasting friendships among peers.

Long ago, wisdom teeth once helped people chew their rough diet of thick, raw vegetation and tough meats. Over time, we’ve lost the need for their third molars due to softer, cooked diets and modern orthodontia. As a result, the majority of people now need to get their wisdom teeth removed because there is not enough room for them to grow in correctly, forcing them to turn and grow into the jaw or push the other molars.
Unchecked, wisdom teeth without enough room to grow can lead to infection, cysts, and tumors that can grow quite large, causing bone loss and even possible destruction of the jaw.
These x-rays show the wisdom teeth growing into the mouth (circled in red). The wisdom tooth on the lower right has turned outwards into the jaw, creating a very large cyst that has eaten away at the bone. The bone loss can been seen as the large dark spot on the right side of the jaw.
