Thank you to our wonderful cafeteria staff!

Between preparing healthy meals for America’s students, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies and offering service with a smile, school nutrition professionals are true heroes.

On Friday, May 7, 2021, LCPS will celebrate the 8th Annual School Lunch Hero Day, which showcases how school nutrition professionals help make a difference for every child who comes through the cafeteria. School Lunch Hero Day provides our community the opportunity to recognize the hard working professionals in our school cafeterias.

Fourth-graders at Belmont Station Elementary recently took a virtual archeology trip to Williamsburg that dug beneath a lot of the subjects archeology has ignored in the past.

An archeologist from Colonial Williamsburg answered questions submitted by students in the classes of Brennen Peters and Abby Shaffer. The questions concerned the excavation of Williamsburg’s First Baptist Church, founded in secret by free and enslaved Blacks in 1776.

The archeologist explained to students that, traditionally, archeology has focused on the lives of the wealthy and powerful. Williamsburg is now trying to tell the story of the enslaved, who were not counted in the census and regarded as property. The Belmont Station lesson demonstrated that archeology has moved beyond simply digging trenches to focus on the lives of everyday people whose stories were often neglected.

🙌Yesterday, the USDA extended school meal waivers in order to allow children, regardless of income, to receive free school meals until Sept. 30, 2021.

This will allow school meals to be served throughout the summer, outside of the normally required group settings and meal times; and parents and guardians will continue to be able to pick-up meals for their children, including bulk pick-up.

Way to go, Oju!

Ojasvi “Oju” Ramani, a fourth-grader at Belmont Station Elementary School, has received a full scholarship to attend the Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
The total monetary value of the scholarship this year is around $1,700, which includes the $1,099 camp fees, a $500 travel stipend and a $100 flight suit. The scholarship to the six-day camp is sponsored by Northrop Grumman Corporation.

Space Camp students work as a team and confront mission scenarios that require dynamic problem solving and critical thinking. Throughout the week, students are immersed in astronaut training techniques using equipment adapted from NASA’s astronaut program. They learn about space hardware, enjoy an educational water activity and experience a spaceflight mission while learning about aerospace career opportunities.

Among the activities are:

• The 1/16th Gravity Chair.
• Learning what it’s like to live onboard the International Space Station.
• Designing and constructing a futuristic Martian colony.
• Launching simulated missions to the International Space Station and beyond.

Belmont Station is so happy to have Ms. Timothy as our new principal! Enjoy this article and get to know her a little more.

Erin Timothy, the new principal of Belmont Station Elementary, knew she wanted to be a teacher in seventh grade in Kingwood, Texas.

“I had moved to several different schools at this point, as my father was a United States Marine. I was always the ‘new kid,’ which made me hesitant to raise my hand in class or answer questions. One day, my math teacher asked if there was someone who could explain how to complete a multi-step problem on the overhead projector. I was nervous but volunteered. After I went through my explanation for the class, the teacher complimented me on my ability to explain the process. The pride and joy I felt when the student next to me said he finally understood how to do it was all it took to know that was what I wanted to do.”

Timothy was more reluctant to leave the classroom for an administrative role.
