Goodbyes aren’t always easy… and some summers are harder to say goodbye to than others.

When it comes to our summer interns, you never really know what’s going to happen. Some we never see again, some circle back around, and some become those familiar faces that just never seem to leave. But either way, saying goodbye at the end of the summer isn’t easy. You start to like having these guys around!

When they first walk through the door, they really don’t know much about what we do. By the time they leave, they’re like little walking encyclopedias full of knowledge they didn’t have a few months ago.

So here’s to these two young guys as they head back to school. We’re hoping they’ll be back next summer—and maybe even during a few school vacations if we’re lucky.

As much as I’d like to say we taught them a lot, the truth is, they probably taught us a few things along the way too.

These guys poured their hearts into it all summer. From loading and unloading machines, cleaning the shop, helping customers, doing basic repairs, and even pulling a few engines under supervision—they jumped in wherever they were needed and did a great job.

If you stopped in this summer and got to interact with either one of them, give this post a like and let them know their hard work was appreciated. They earned it.

Good luck this school year, guys. We’re proud of you. Now go learn something—and don’t forget everything we taught you! 😂

Okay, okay… I’m hesitant to post this because if I’m not talking about tractors, I’m talking about food — and this one combines both. 😂🍕🚜

But this is a HUGE shoutout to Jerry.

Jerry’s mower came in with an issue, but of course, by the time it got here, the symptoms had disappeared. We tested it, ran it, tried to get it to act up… nothing.

And heck, Jerry’s been a customer for as long as I can remember. Rick’s worked on his equipment, Jesse’s worked on his equipment, I’ve worked on his equipment. He’s just a good guy — one of those customers you’re always happy to see.

So, long story short, we sent the machine back and didn’t write a bill on it.

When Jerry called, I truthfully told him, “Hey, don’t get too excited, because when it DOES come back with the issue, I’m gonna write you a bill on it.” 😂

His response?

“Did you guys have lunch yet?”

Half an hour later… this showed up. 🍕🍕

If Jerry was looking for the way to a mechanic’s heart, I’d say he figured it out.

Thanks, Jerry. You made all of our day — and lunch was damn good too! 😂

Running a business is about setting boundaries, knowing your limits, but still doing what you can to keep things moving.

Here you have it. My boy Doug over at Wood and Ink stopped in and said, “Hey, do you guys work on electric chainsaws?”

The answer was pretty simple: Nope. We don’t. 😂

And guys, I’m gonna be brutally honest here. Electric equipment absolutely has its place. It’s great for certain people and certain jobs. Heck, we’ve even sold it in the past.

But from the repair side, the truth is the support just isn’t there. A lot of times the parts aren’t available, and even when you can find a part number, actually getting the part can turn into a special-order scavenger hunt that takes weeks. That’s a big reason we stay away from working on this stuff.

But… this is Doug.

I know the quality of work he puts out. I know the things he’s done for me over the years. And really, he’s just a pretty awesome dude.

So I told him, “Leave it with me. Let me take a swing at it.”

Pulled the saw apart, cleaned everything out, and started digging. Eventually found a wire that had come apart from corrosion at the switch.

Now technically, the switch is replaceable.

Realistically? Good luck finding one. 😂 There’s a part number, and I’m sure somewhere, somehow, you could special-order the thing and wait who knows how long for it to show up.

The heck with that.

Soldered her back up, put everything together, and away she goes. ⚡🪚

Sometimes knowing your boundaries is important.

And sometimes knowing when to bend them for a good dude is important too.

Keep building cool stuff, Doug. Let’s see what you come up with next. 👊

This is living proof of why you hire based on who you believe someone can become—not just what they’re capable of doing today.

Years ago, when Will first walked into the shop, you probably wouldn’t have guessed that one day he’d be our shop foreman. And you definitely wouldn’t have guessed he’d be the guy tracking down mysterious electrical problems like this one.

And yes… that is one heck of a mouse nest. 🐭😂

You’re probably wondering how something that big could possibly be hard to find. Well, this one was tucked WAY up inside this 700 Series John Deere—so far back that even the owner, who admitted he’s found mouse nests in this machine before, had never seen one in that location.

It was packed in there so well that the entire dash ended up having to come apart just to get to everything and find the damage.

But at the end of the day, Will found it, repaired the damage, and solved the intermittent no-start issue.

That’s what matters.

Or maybe the bigger lesson is this: Hire good people based on who they are, their work ethic, and what you believe they can become. Skills can be taught. Experience comes with time. Give the right person an opportunity, and you might be surprised where they end up.

Pretty damn proud of this one. Nice work, Will. 🔧🇺🇸

Packed it today. Phone ringing off the hook. Line of customers out the door. Funny how that works… it rains, and you all show up again.

Connor was the first to leave. Then Will. Then Jesse. After everyone headed home, I took a minute to lock up and looked around the shop.

Every lift was full.

Most people would probably think, “That’s because Ben’s making money.” Truth is, that’s not what makes me smile.

What makes me happy is what those full lifts represent.

Whether it’s a mower, chainsaw, generator, leaf blower, or snowblower, every machine sitting on a lift means someone is busy. It means the grass is growing, the leaves are falling, or winter is on its way. It means life is happening.

Let’s be honest… nobody likes dry, brown grass. Nobody likes every leaf dropping at once. And nobody enjoys those long, dull, gray New England winters.

But when winter actually shows up the way it’s supposed to—big snowflakes falling, kids out sledding, neighbors helping neighbors dig out, families making memories, and the folks who make a living plowing snow finally getting to do what they do—that’s a different story. That’s New England at its best.

I was born here, raised here, still live here, and I run my business just a couple of towns over. I’m a New Englander through and through.

So yeah, call me a simple man.

If seeing a shop full of equipment at the end of the day puts a smile on my face—not because of the dollars, but because it means people are outside living life, working hard, and enjoying the seasons the way they’re meant to be—then I’m perfectly okay with being simple.

That’s just me.
