🐾 A very bleated Happy National Dog Day from Finding Nectar! 🐾

Our farm runs on a lot of things: plants, pollinators, muddy boots, early mornings… and a whole lot of dogs. 😂

Meet the crew:

🛡️ Winston & Piper
Our veteran livestock guardian dogs. They take their jobs very seriously and keep a watchful eye on everyone who calls the farm home.

🎓 Andorra
Our baby girl and newest member of the team. She’s currently in training and learning the livestock guardian life from the best teacher around, Piper. She has a lot to learn and absolutely no shortage of confidence.

✨ Theo
Chief Officer of Vibes. His official responsibilities include supervising farm activities, providing moral support, looking adorable, and making sure everyone remembers to take a break for pets.

We’re pretty lucky to have this crew watching over the farm. Happy National Dog Day to our four-legged coworkers! ❤️🐾

🐐 Happy National Goat Day! 💚

We have a pretty great goat crew here at Finding Nectar, including our LaManchas and this very handsome, very bearded gentleman who looks like he has a little Nubian in him.

A few fun goat facts:

Goats are natural browsers, which means they prefer munching on leaves, shrubs, weeds, and woody plants rather than grazing primarily on grass.

LaMancha goats are famous for their tiny ears. Their distinctive ear shape is actually what gives the breed its name.

And yes, that beard is real! Both male and female goats can grow beards, although they tend to be more pronounced in males.

Our goats are part of the daily rhythm of the farm, keeping us entertained, helping manage vegetation, and generally making sure there is never a dull day around here.

Come meet the goat crew next time you visit Finding Nectar! 🐐🌱

☀️🐝 Bees can overheat, too.

When summer temperatures climb toward 95°F and beyond, honey bees have to spend more energy keeping their hive—and especially their developing brood—cool.

You may even see them “bearding” outside the hive, like the bees in this photo. 🐝 When the hive gets hot, worker bees gather at the entrance and along the outside of the hive. This helps reduce crowding inside and allows air to circulate while other bees fan their wings to move air through the colony.

Inside, bees also collect and spread water throughout the hive, using evaporation as their own natural air-conditioning system. 💨💧

So if you see a hive covered in bees on a hot summer day, don’t panic! They may simply be working together to beat the heat.

Pretty incredible for a creature that weighs less than a grain of rice. 💛

🐝🍯 Happy National Honey Bee Day!

Today we’re celebrating one of the hardest-working members of the farm crew.

Honey bees do so much more than make honey—they’re essential pollinators, helping move pollen from flower to flower and supporting the plants, crops, and ecosystems we depend on.

We’re grateful for the bees that visit our farm, the beekeepers who care for them, and everyone who plants a little more habitat for pollinators.

Want to help? 🌼 Plant something that blooms, skip unnecessary pesticides, and give pollinators a place to thrive.

And, of course, come see us for some local honey! 🍯

🌼 The flowers that keep the garden glowing.

Black-eyed Susans are one of those plants that never go out of style. Their warm golden blooms brighten the garden from midsummer into fall while providing a reliable source of nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.

Tough, drought-tolerant once established, and easy to grow, they’re a favorite for pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, and naturalized landscapes alike.

As the season begins to wind down, Black-eyed Susans keep the color coming; and they don’t just look beautiful. Their seed heads provide food for songbirds well into fall and winter, making them a gift to wildlife long after the blooms have faded.

If you’re looking for a plant that’s beautiful, resilient, and buzzing with life, this is it. 💛

Stop by the nursery and let us help you find the perfect Rudbeckia for your garden!

The Jefferson County Fair has become one of my favorite weeks of the year. ❤️

Getting to play a small part in 4-H and watching these kids show goats that were born and raised here on the farm is incredibly rewarding. We didn’t come home with ribbons this year, but honestly, that wasn’t the point.

Watching these kids grow in confidence, build trust with their animals, and step into the show ring made me proud. It’s amazing how much they learn in such a short time, and I think the animals—and the adults—grow right alongside them.

This experience has challenged me, too. Teaching isn’t something you’re automatically good at; it’s something you learn, just like farming. Every year these kids push me to become a better teacher, mentor, and farmer, and I’m grateful for that.

The fair is about so much more than competition. It’s about responsibility, resilience, hard work, and the relationships built along the way.

Here’s to another year of learning, growing, and making memories together. See you next year, fair. 🐐🌾💚
