I have been thinking a lot about fairness vs equality as I work on my Master's degree. I recently came across this article and feel it is appropriate and worth considering. I agree with the article that each child needs to be considered as a unique individual with specific needs. What may seem unfair is not actually true as children need to have unfair experiences to develop character. As parents, I feel it is worth it to evaluate ourselves and what we are teaching our children. Most things in this life are NOT fair. Children should not be made to feel guilty because things are NOT fair and be forced to make everything fair. Instead, we as parents need to explain, the reason why children need different attention, time spent with one parent or adult at different times in their life. This teaches EMPATHY and Compassion, these skills are much more important than Fairness. Read on for further understanding and evaluate where you are as a parent. It's never too late to make a difference in a child's life.
"Ít's not fair !" Kids say it. We deny it. But how do we actually teach our children about fairness. And should life even be fair ? Katy Gosset looks at one of parenting's prickly issues.
